Bushmaster M4 A3 for $899 - Deal or No Deal?

The local shop has the Bushmaster M4 A3 for $899 which seems to be a pretty good deal for my area. From what I've researched, the AR in question seems to be a good model and something that would be a good starting point for me (1st rifle owned).

Would there be any reasons not to get this exact model for that price?

I am a rifle newbie, and while the building or putting together uppers/lowers sounds good, I rather just get a complete rifle to learn on.
 
That is a pretty decent price for a bushmaster. The AR-15 platform is super simple to learn on and very easy to disassemble and reassemble. There are a million different accesories that you can buy for them. And you will make all of your gun friends jealous if you are the first one in your group to own one. Just remember to keep your nose on the charging handle to keep a consistent sight picture.
 
I paid about $30 less than that out the door last spring for that same model, but that was with a 10% military discount. At that time I felt I was getting a fair, but not spectacular, deal as most places where I lived had them for $920-975 before tax. I yet to have a problem with mine and think it is just fine for someone starting out.

At the time, I could not justify spending the $1700-1800 most of the local gun shops wanted for a Colt (when I could find one) as the Bushmaster fit all my needs and wants for what I was doing then, and allowed me to purchase a Beretta 92FS and still stay several hundred dollars under my budget. Now that my needs and wants have changed, I am now looking for a Colt, however I will not be getting rid of my Bushmaster anytime soon.
 
You know, some people feel guilty after a purchase involving that much money...like they were perhaps selfish. So, I wouldn't want you to suffer. I will volunteer to allow you to buy and donate that rifle to me. Yes, it would be a burden to endure the guilt, but what are friends for, right? :D Good price. I just saw that model in Royal Oak, MI for $1,199.00!
 
If you like the dealer, support him. It's a pretty good deal. You could beat it if you work at it, but the extra $25 you might spend with the dealer could be a good relationship builder.
 
^ I'm not too concerned about the price difference up to $50. It's the local shop, and I stop by there often just to see what new stuff they have.

My main concern was checking to see what most people thought of that specific model and if it would be a good fit for me. The only thing stopping me now is if I want to go the AR route or an AK. Tough decision for me.....keep going back and forth.
 
I paid $750 for mine but that was three years ago. From what I've seen at the gun shows $899 now days isn't far out of line.
Probably this time next year you will be happy you bought it for "only" $899.

Mine is a good rifle. Trigger needs work though.
 
Local shop had one for $850...I traded a Ruger 10/22, Single Six, and Savage 17HMR for it. It came with the hard case, removable rear sight, and two mags. He also sold me a removable scope mount for $20.

They have another one but I think it is the 14" with the permanent (long) muzzle brake. But it is going for more then mine did.

I think that price is pretty good

I bought that model a couple of years ago. It was on "sale" for $900 at the local store. Local gun shows carried it then and now at about the same price or just a bit lower. I chose to support the local dealer that has given me good advice and cheap transfer fees.

I have never regretted it. It shoots great, functions 100%, and looks really cool. I have many rifles, but this is one of my favorites.

It's the rifle I often get out of the safe and lean against the wall in the living room so that I can admire it ... and so I can grab it and the 30-rd clip in it if needed.

I just fired about 60 rds through it this weekend, and about 40 rds through another favorite, an M1 Garand. Good times!
 
That's about what I had into a Bushmaster M4gery after taxes and I felt it was an excellent piece at a decent price. Have owned it about six months and am up to about 900 rounds. Know of two others and no complaints at all. The one thing worth changing on them is to fit a match trigger. I put in a Jard non-adjustable (Brownell's) and it makes all the difference.

Color me a little skeptical when people say the Colt is substantially better and worth the price difference. I used them in the service and in the mid-80s had a Colt CAR-15 for work for a while. It was a good little gun but no better and no worse than my current carbine. It may be nice to have the Prancing Pony on the side but I'd rather sink the extra money into optics and ammo.

So far I am a satisfied customer and I am sort of hard to please.
 
Thats a respectable price. You could do better but it would take a lot of time and work and you wouldn't likely save a whole lot.

Thats also an excellent first rifle ... easy to use, easy to clean, inexpensive to feed, accurate enough that it'll be quite a while before you can outshoot it, evil looking (so it'll frighten the antis), reliable and well made, good for "social work" and dagummit, just fun as all get out to shoot!
