Many of you may know about this product or even have one but if you're uninformed read on. Anyone who's field dressed a deer knows about cutting around the **** and attempting to tie it off and pull it through without spilling the beans. With this tool it can be easily done by anyone. Just push it in, twist until the membrane lets loose, pull it out and tie it off. Really, really simple. I noticed the tool itself twisted a bit when I applied pressure but it didn't break. That would be my only concern with the product and maybe someone can chime in whether or not that's a problem. I bought mine at Wally Word for about $10.

Can't speak highly enough of it.

Is this the video you saw NRA4LIFE?

He call's it a Deeriere, which I believe was the original trade name. Mine was sold as a "Butt-Out" and is hunter orange and not green like the one in the video. Everything else is the same, though I usually tie it off and then cut it just to be careful.

When you twist that thing, does it actually cut the a$$ pipe?
It didn't on the smallish doe I used it on. It just loosens up whatever holds the pipe in place, sort of like giving the deer a really bad hemmoroid(sp.).:D

I've never had much trouble with the old fashioned way. A buddy of mine thinks we need to purchase a couple for use this year. No thanks, I'll stick to the ol' pocket knife. I don't need any more gadgets to haul around in my pockets or pack.

Old fashioned works fine...

Who needs more gadgetry? And besides, a plastic thingie you stick up a dead deer's a** is just plain disgusting.

Are we becoming too prissy as hunters? What next--an aerosol spray can of smell-good, to overcome that awful gut-shot odor? Mebbe a 3' extension on yr knife handle, so's you don't have to stick yr hand all the way into the deer's chest cavity to cut off the esophagus and windpipe?

Most of it is just manufacturers' hype, methinks. They've always gotta be coming up with something else to make, and then find buyers for the stuff. At least I hope that's it, and not the prissy factor.

Agree with your post 1000%.

Excuse me, I need to check on the [strike] kids [/strike] Professionals in the shop
Camo Duct tape on empty soda cans for cigarette "butt" cans.
These are when hunters are standing around the truck smoking and having a place for butts, $15.95 + S+H.
$19.95 get the ones with a magnet taped, so the "butt can" does not tump over in the truck bed or one can stick it on the outside side of the truck.

R&D is still testing the one with Hook&Loop for those trucks with full bed liners.
At the moment the little lady cannot get the package open and the young man assisting cannot get the Hook&Loop to come off the roll right.

These things are selling like hot cakes! ;)

Well, Thx!!

SM--Thx for the endorsement!

Pls understand--I'm not one of those frowning anti-everything-that-grandpaw-didn't-use types. If I were, I guess I wouldn't hunt with anything but wool clothes, leather boots, and a Savage Model 99 in .250-3000.

The difference between unnecessary gadgetry and an honest-to-gosh improvement will always be debatable. Probably only time will tell, with any given new thing, if it really is worth having. Some new things strike some people right away, as unnecessary gadgetry, and I guess that's me with the Deer Butt-Out. I've seen 'em in stores, and was disgusted by the notion of the thing immediately.

If I see what appears to be a truly better mousetrap, you bet I'll buy one.

But a Deer Butt-out?? Yachhh! :barf::barf::barf: NEVER!!!

Some folks are just gadget types. Nothing wrong with it but not my style. I think of myself as more of a minimalist. I hunt with a guy that shows up with some new gadget every time we hunt together. He's spent a fortune and he's got it all. But he ususally has to borrow something from me before the hunt is over because either he forgot batteries or something breaks or doesn't work, etc.
That special de-analizing butt-out tool looks like a solution to a non-existant problem. The knife that is already in my pocket works just fine. Anybody that can't de-butt a deer without one just needs more practice.

I'll stick with the blade. To be honest, I wouldn't know where to put the "Butt-Out" once I got done using it on the deer. Yuck. Good to know it works as advertised though!

Is it necessary to have one? No. I gutted deer for nearly 30 years without one. All I can tell you is that it works and works better than traditional methods for me and as long as the plastic handle doesn't break off I'll be using it in the future. And you can call me a sissy all you want. :D

I'd rather put the butt-out in a plastic baggy and keep my knife blade "cleaner" for when I'm cutting the other parts and avoid potentially getting some ookiness on the meat.

If I find one in a store around here and it's only a couple of bucks I'll probably give it a try this year. I also use a survival saw to cut the pelvic bone.

I think you nailed it! And I agree with you 100% about the pelvis. Ripping that open just exposes more meat to oxygen, dirt, and flies.

You nailed it Smoky Joe. Invariably, when the pelvis is split, what is the first thing that has to be done when butchering? You have to shave off all the exposed meat on the hind quarters that got dark, dirty and nasty that would not have been exposed if done properly.
