I will be buying a Marlin 1895 GBL for my son's birthday next month and wanted to get a leather butt stock cover and sling to go with it. My son is cross-eye dominant, so he shoots left-handed and will need the cartridge loops on the other side. Most leather shops I have found have a LONG wait time, so I may need to find something that is a bit more "off the shelf".

The stock covers I have found that can ship quickly don't fully cover the butt and recoil pad, which is not desirable IMO (my experience has been that they always slip if not covering the recoil pad).

Are there any leather vendors that you recommend that could ship a left-handed set up (matching sling and butt stock cover)?

Thanks in advance!!!!

I can't think of a single good reason for a butt stock / sling combination, if that's what you are asking about?

Put QD sling swivels on the stock and mag tube, and put the sling on right.

Full coverage leather butt cuffs make for a slippery butt pad, and a 45-70 will hurt you if it slips out of your shoulder pocket.
And slow you down on follow-up shots.

I'm just not a big fan of butt cuffs.
But if that's what you want, it's your sons gun.

I don't know where you could get a left hand one on short notice either.

So, I should just shut up.

I appreciate your sense of humor with that last line. :) I happen to like stock covers/cuffs (I have one on my Savage 116) and use it to store extra rounds, but it doesn't cover the recoil pad and it is *not* connected to the sling. It does slip around a little which is why I thought a complete cuff on the Marlin GBL would be more desirable, but you made a good point about recoil. The Savage does have a kick, but the recoil pad keeps it locked in; it's better to give the Marlin the same treatment.

It's all a moot point anyway since I cannot find a left-handed one, plus there's no way to get it in time. I'll get a nice leather sling with his initials on it (which actually *CAN* be done in time for his birthday). If he wants a matching butt cover, then he do that later on his own nickel later.

One good reason is many vintage rifles (ex. some Savage 99's) and even some newer ones (early BLR's) came without them, and if you start drilling the stock the value will slide when you eventually do want to sell the gun, even if you do a good job of placement and centering.
