I have shot my new Walmart $99 Remington 700 .243 (and a 7mm RM also at $99) enough to sight in and did grab some ammo for it back in the summer. The ammo amounted to more than the rifle. Shoots great, scope was on the money, just needed some tweaking. I need a die set for it now and some bullets. The .243 being a new to me cartridge I do not have a lot for it. I did not hunt with it this year, I used my new Walmart $179 plus $50 rebate Savage Axis II in stainless fitted with a Boyd's stock in 6.5CM to draw blood this year. There was a ton of 6.5CM on the shelves long after most other ammo had gone so I stocked up. But it is scarce now as well and again, I need a die set for it in due course.
Both the Walmart and the Attwoods near me still have a few rifles in stock but no ammo. Might check a few places like that. I think there will be hunting caliber rifles and ammo back by next hunting season. Just will need to be persistent.
I went to Cabela's Saturday, they had put a little bit of ammo out. There were five (older) fellows, each holding their limit while one was on the cell phone to (his buyer) wanting to know what he could get for the ammo. Apparently the buyer wanted it, the guy on the phone nodded to the other men and they all marched of leaving the shelves bare. There is where you ammo is going.
