So I finally convinced my wife the zombies are coming and I need a new rifle! Not really but I have saved up enough to possibly purchase an AR-15. I currently have an Ak-47 which I'm very fond of and would like to add the AR-15 to my collection. I have been looking online and in my local shops for any good deals and was wondering if any one here has any suggestions? My current limit is just under $800.

I am going to Top Gun in Arnold tomorrow to check out their prices and I have been to Mid America Arms but they were out of my price range. I've seen a couple Olympic Arms for under $700 on the internet that are in the running. I also want to check around any of the pawnshops near Affton or St. Louis area maybe I can find a good deal.

It's a little over your budget but Spikes Tactical has standard M4's for $799.99 and middy's for $809.99

At Christmas, I bought a S&W M&P15OR for $649 on sale. That still leaves you $150 for a decent set of iron sights or a decent scope. Retail price is around $1069; Sportsman's Warehouse was selling for $949. Had a 3 day christmas sale, $200 of; for $749, and S&W had a military/police appreciation $100 rebate: Final price was $649. In my opinion, you can't build the same or better quality for that price. Point is: Don't be in a rush. There is always a sale going on some place on something. The rifles will be there. You'll find a good price.

The Black Rifle in Columbia sells CMMG ARs for prices will within your price range. The CMMG rifles are made locally and have a good reputation. The Cabela's store in Hazelwood also usually has ARs in your price range.

The January 10th Shotgun News details building an ultra-affordable AR.

Summary:
PCF C-15 complete lower receiver $119,
Weapon Systems International 16" M-4 style upper receiver $299,
CMT bolt carrier assembly $120,
DPMS charging handle $19.95,
Magpul MBUS folding rear sight $57.95.

Total $615.90.

Magpul mags, ammo, and a bag to haul it all to the range would fill out your budget nicely.

See you at Henges or Busch range here in the STL area.

Black Rifle in Columbia is where I got my CMMG Bargain bin AR for $599. Unbeatable deal IMO. I would imagine they have a larger stock of bargain bin rifles at gun shows.

So I got a DPMS Oracle in 5.56 from Cabels for..... I seen the same rifle in 7.62x39 that I was interested in but the guy behind the counter said they sold 4 when they first came out and all 4 came back because the owners were having a lot of problems with them cycling steel case ammo and that is why I would get one (I have a lot of wolf/brown bear 762). Can anyone confirm this for me. If it isn't an issue I may trade mine in for the other caliber!

Be sure to look at CCMG like mentioned above. My son, I and my brother all have one of the bargain. There is a gunshow at machinist hall this coming weekend. CMMG is normally there.

Machinist Hall? I moved here to St Louis with my wife a year ago so she could go to Wash U and I am still getting a feel for the area so I'm not sure where that is. Also I went ahead and bought a DPMS Oracle from Cabelas so now I will be looking to upgrade with new gear! Has anyone had any luck with the Eotech knock offs? I seen some at a gun show in my home town last month and they were enticing but you never know with knock offs and 80 bucks is more than I'm willing to spend on a potential paper weight!

I got a Doublestar Star 15 for about $700 for Christmas. Ordered off of budsgunshop.com and everything went very well. (VERY fast shipping)

I am very pleased with the gun, and it is much more accurate than I thought it would be. (Punching quarters at 85 yds consistently using a four-wheeler seat as a rest)

+1

My Spike's middy has been flawless through 1200 rounds so far. It's also a solid choice if you're looking for the whole "mil-spec" package as well.
