Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to give you some insight, then I'm heading to the range and will check back tomorrow.

After 6 months of the initial 3 calibers, I do plan on extending to other "hard to find" calibers. The problem being, the first 3 have to do well to justify taking on more and more machines.

I will have the website setup when production is ready. I currently have 5 other sites, and the overhead is high enough that I honestly don't want inquiries until I have product available. (Besides, don't you hate going to AIM and seeing "backordered" everywhere?)

You will be able to order online, and one of the beginning promotions will be group buys (aka, buy 10 cases get the 11th one free or something along that line). This will enable groups to get together and stock up with a few months ammunition, for an awesome price.

A lot of the details are still being hashed out (prices, shipping, etc), but half of the calculations depend on the calibers I start out with, thus this thread ;)

I'm going to let this poll go for 15 days, to allow everyone to have their say. As soon as a strong majority appears, the decision will be made, and the machines purchased. Soon thereafter I can give everyone expected prices, caliber specifications, etc.

Thanks and I'll check back tomorrow!

I've had poor luck with bulk reloads. But if I was to go that route I would pick all of the above.

If I could also be notified via PM when prices are available, that'd be great. :)

I'm assuming I'm being way too much of a cheap bastard to hope that they'll run around $0.15/rd. I can handle $150/1000...

Ah, the joys of being a young man.

As in your last thread, I'm going to be devila advocate again.;)

Anyhow, be sure to obtain those permits and FFL's, BEFORE, you purchase equiptment.

As far as production, I'd reccommend 308, as there'd be less competition.

BTW, any soft point 7.62x39, would be nice if it had a similar POI to wolf or other surplus FMJ. I reloaded for the thing when I actually hunted with it, a 135 Sierra Pro hunter which is no longer made. That load worked really well, but he WAY low compared to FMJ which is a bummer since I like plinking with mil surp stuff.

.223

Anyone who can get me descent priced .223 is the man. Congrats on the new business, and when you have it I need some 55 gr .223 FMJ.

Hope you do well.
I reload what I shoot but .223 components seem harder to come by lately so maybe that would be my pick.

Surplus .308 is just about gone...the demand is so high that with what little is left out there the prices are pushed up to going for up to .50 cents a round!

Run the figures and do the math....if you can mass produce a 147 grain FMJ cheap plinker round for a decent price and still make a good profit...you will make a mint just on a .308/7.62x51 alternative.

Good luck to you...sounds like a real great business to be in right now.

For me you are dead on, .223, 7.62x39 and .308. However I have no interest in FMJ and would prefer to buy SP or HP ammo. As an example I buy a lot of Black Hills .223 in 52 gr. HPBT and 55 gr. SP.

I selected 7.62x39 HP, but in reality I'd buy all three.

Best of luck with the business.

Let us know when you start pounding out rounds and I promise to order at least a 1,000 of something.

I think your choices are dead-on to start with. Once you get into pistol ammo (if all goes well) I'd be interested in JHP .45ACP at a reasonable price. I also agree with those who suggested doing more of the milsurp ammo as it gets more scarce. If a guy only has to pay an additional $30/500rd case for match grade ammo (which is where things seem to be headed) you'd be in a very good position.

Good luck!

I'm back

A few things to note:

1) This is not bulk reloads. This is brand new USA manufactured ammunition.
2) As soon as prices are solidified, I will post a thread announcing the prices and how to order.

Thanks for all the hits on the polls, At this point it appears FMJ is leading for all three calibers. Look out for the next thread, in the near future :)

Personally, I'd be most interested in 7.62x39 soft points.Whats available is a bit too pricey for me, since fmj serves my purposes just fine, but for a good price, I'd definitely prefer soft point for more versatility.

As you say you will be going the match grade route for this I would suggest going with the heavier rounds, 62g and above and keep a close eye on the tolerances.

The market will tend to split into the Quantity and Quality streams. People will pay a premium for accurate and consistent loads but your initial bread and butter will be the 1000 round bucket folks.

Probably worthwhile doing "match" grade runs periodically possibly with something like Open Tip Match rounds, advertise and emphasise the quality control and close to handload specifications.

If you haven't done it yet, good idea to get a web site up and running as soon as possible and keep it up to date.

It would probably be a good idea to have the website set up through someone like www.godaddy.com as you can then add credit card ordering etc as and when you need it.

If the equipment allows you reasonably easily to change calibres, then possibly do advertised periodic specialist runs. Possibly .50BMG, 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendel etc.

Looking forward to ordering.....

In my opinion, what this guy says is true. If you decide to load HP, load it in 308 and 223, and keep the tolerances tight, making true match grade ammunition. The wait time on Black Hills blue box is quite long, from my understanding. . . You could fill the void. Then you could also load FMJ to slightly lower tolerances for cheaper for ppl wanting to blast away. I would buy reloadable decently priced OTM 223 ammo.

If its feasable to load 5.45X39, I think this may be something to look into for further down the road. AFAIK, american suppliers of 5.45x39 are few and far between. Right now, milsurp ammo is dirt cheap, but, if that supply dries up, you could move into the niche.

Just my opinions. If you go into buisness, i probably wont buy much, cause i'm a poor college student, but if you offer good ammo at a decent price, i might go in for a hundred or few rounds.

I know I am in left field, but would love to see three things, either now, or next year:
7.62x54r in SP, say, about 150 grains.
cheap .38 special+p 158gr LSWCHP
cheap .357 mag 158gr LSWCHP
