Chambered in 38-55. Montana Vintage Arms Model B scope 5X with Unertl type mounts. Green River heavy octagon hand lapped barrel. Single set rigger.

For some time I have used a Marlin 336CB in 38-55 competing in our Buffalo Shoot competition. Couldn't get the Marlin to group less than 2" at 100 yards 5 shots. So I decided life is a little short.

Casting a 310 gr tapered bullet that will go with the 1:15 twist used in custom 38-55s. 1:18 is the normal twist rate. Probably use Swiss or Ol Eynsford FFg. C Sharps .jpg

I don't see very many (any?) of these type of rifles here. Do any of you load and compete with a rifle like this.

looks like a winchester high wall to me. eastbank.

Used to, when I had more time. I competed in BPCS, buffalo matches etc. I'm hoping to get back into it after my next retirement. I have 2 Ballard Rifle and Cartridge 1885 High Wall repros, .45-90 and .40-72 and I Shiloh Sharps #1 Sporter in .45-100 (2.6"):

.40-70, English Walnut:

.45-90 American black walnut:

These rifles are a blast to shoot, but once you start with casting your own bullets (pretty much mandatory for accuracy at distance) and loading black powder, they're time intensive. I'd literally spend about 8 hrs between casting, lubing and loading for a 2 day 80 rd match.

Nope I don't have one of those, only drool over pictures of them. What a beautiful rifle!

The case hardening looks wonderful.

My wife shoots one of those hi walls in 40-65 and a lo wall in 22 lr. Nice rifles. I had them put the single set trigger on when I order those for her.

Fine looking rifle you've got there! Really love the color case hardening on it; looks like waves on the ocean!
