CA State Sporting Clays Championship Review & Pictures:

I recently shot in the CA State Sporting Clays Championship held at Triple B Clays in El Monte CA (Los Angeles). This event was held over 4 days from June 24th thru June 27th. They had a small gauge, FITASC, 5-stand, 100-bird pre-lim and a 200-bird main event.

I only shot in the main event. But some “real men†shot them all :). I normally compete in monthly fun shoots, and in a few charity events. I had never shot in a state event before and I didn’t know what to expect. This one didn’t let me down.

Bruce at Triple B had set a very challenging 14-station course. At some stations we shot 3 pair and at others we shot 4. Some were true pairs, most were report and 1 was following. I found all the targets to be hittable, unfortunately just not by me :). If you know Bruce, you know he throws some “tricky†targets. They always look “easyâ€, but they’re all doing something right when I want to shoot them. Curling, dropping, fading away, you get the idea.

The main event was shot on Saturday & Sunday with 100 birds each day. I was scheduled to shoot in the middle flight on Saturday and on the late flight on Sunday. When I arrived, I was pleased to see everything was running smoothly. 5-man squads, no waiting at the stations and Northview High School Cheerleaders pulling / scoring. What more could you ask for?

Saturday’s course was set harder than Sundays. I shot a 73 on Saturday and was pretty happy with that. However on Sunday (the easier course), I managed to shoot a 70. Don’t ask me why. Actually, I thought the only easier stations on Sunday were 15 & 16. But I had shot them pretty well on Saturday, so I didn’t gain anything.

We were finished shooting by 3:45 on Sunday and thanks to Lois, they had the scores up by 4:30. Billie (Bruce’s wife) started giving out the awards, I think there were over 100 of them. Jim Porter gave out the Junior awards and we were out of there by 6:00.

We had about 210 people shoot in the main. All in all it was a great event. Well run, fun targets and a good time was had by all.

I've never knew about this place when I was back in CA, when I was in So Cal I would always just go to Oak tree.

How does this course compair with Oak Tree?

In my opinion Oak Tree is the finest sporting clays course I have ever had the pleasure to shoot. The majestic targets, if you miss that seem to go on and on down huge ravines, or smash into the side of cliffs.

Oaktree has some great views. Unfortunately they don't change their targets very often (ever). They guy that runs it doesn't seem to care. No advertising, no flyers.

Triple B on the other hand is a flat course in the middle of LA (60 & 605). They throw some great targets and change them weekly. It's the old Pachmayr range. Bruce is a nice guy and a great target setter.

Moore 'N Moore is a cross between the 2. Good targets and it's down the road from Oaktree on the 210 near the 5. Pat Moore runs it and he's a hell of a nice guy.

Raahauges in Norco (91 & 15) is a semi flat / hilly course with OK targets. What can you say about Mike Raahauge that hasn't been said before :)

Not bad for being in So. Cal.

How did you concentrate?

Easy, they're 15 and I'm 45. Wait a second, 15 times 3 is... never mind.
