caliber/gun for your personal trophy

First poster here, I've been interested to hear what people want and have the most confidence in for when they're hunting
Anything I'm comfortable and familiar with. A 11½" shorty .223 AR for small game (hunting with it for 31+ years now), R25 in .308 for most medium and big game in treestand or blind, Mini30 or Deerfield Carbine for driven deer hunts, Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen for driven/stalking moose and an Accurate Innovations custom Weatherby Mark V in .375H&H for anything that might as well kill me instead. Revolvers boil down to a 6" Colt Anaconda, every time.

And - of course - both common .22 rimfires in a plethora of varieties for lots and lots of different small critters.

What I'm still undecided on is a long range mountain and plains rifle, in case I ever have to shoot past 400 yards. I'm convinced I eventually need something to the tune of .300WinMag/.338Lapua but SWMBO, not so much...

This is by no means a fixed list. Whenever I impulse buy something and realize it works better for a certain task than anything else I already have, it replaces something on the list.

Have a coupla new "Special" rifles... but they're still more new than special.

If I had to hunt in a dark storm, on rough, uneven ground, through trees and thickets, over dubious range at a running monster...?

It would have to be ole meat-gitter. .270 WCF/150 gr. NP.

Nope I reckon that one is even LESS likely to shoot itself around here! Looks rugged but stylish!

M70 EW/SS.

Really like it, but it has a little different mount, point, and balance than the M700.

It's also nice to know than it will take endless rain and snow, and that when I slip in the mud, I can just sloosh it out in a creek or bayou and get back to work.

:D

I figure if you see your dream target, what you have will do. In a perfect world it would be my vz24. It’s not my most accurate gun, but for some reason, it is my favorite.

In all likelihood, it would be a .300wsm. Probably a Remington 700 because life and the expenses thereof keep impeding my efforts to add a Winchester 70 in .300wsm to the mix. Since I already have the 700, it makes sense that I would have it with me, not a gun I only hope to one day have.

I have lost interest in rifles. It’s too easy to sit in a ground blind eating trail mix with a little heater and a cell phone to keep you occupied then knock over Bambi when you finish your round of mini golf. For hunting, I feel very confident in having a .357 revolver on my hip. I’m either going to make a shot, or have a great time watching nature in action.

If I do carry a rifle though, it would most likely be my grandpas 30-30. I feel a connection to him and an even stronger connection to my grandma when i handle that rifle.

Some people might shake their head, but I have a Zastava Mauser in .458 WM. I load the Mauser with cast lead bullets ala 45/70 velocities, and hunt with it. The brass lasts forever, and it's a real thumper in the game fields.

I don't shake my head at all because I understand what you are doing. After years of hunting I have migrated from small fast bullets to bigger heavier bullets and they just seem to work better. With the smaller diameter bullets I would stare intently at the animal after the shot trying to figure out what it's reaction was going to be. With the larger heavier bullets you know what is going to happen when you pull the trigger. My favorite hunting rifle is fast becoming my 338-06. Very interesting.

Several years ago I hunted with a guy named Pete and for his birthday his friends at work took up a collection and bought him a Ruger 77 in 458 Winchester. I wondered at the time what he was going to do with the "thing" but if I had that rifle today I would probably consider trying it with the Speer HotCor 350 grain bullet. The rifle would be interesting if it weighed about 9 pounds and had a 22 inch barrel, and I would keep the velocity below 2000 fps as you are doing.
