How could this happen in calif. they have all those gun laws? :cuss:

Calif. woman slain on the phone with 911 41 minutes ago

A woman was asking a 911 dispatcher for help when her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence. She was shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said. "Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Deputies arrived at the house, 20 miles east of Los Angeles, a few minutes after Wednesday's late morning call.

The woman, whose name was not released by police, had been shot several times. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

"At this point we believe it was a burglary gone awry," Rosenberg said.

Investigators are trying to determine if anything was taken, Deputy Luis Castro said.

While police were investigating the shooting, a man arrived at the home asking about his wife.

When he heard that the woman had been shot and killed, he collapsed and started to cry, saying "No! She just called me. You lie."

The man was placed in a patrol car and taken to a sheriff's station, police said.

Witnesses said they saw one or more men running from the house, Rosenberg said.

Investigators used bloodhounds to conduct yard-to-yard searches.

No arrests had been made by Thursday morning, deputies said.

As a precaution during the search, a high school and an elementary school were locked down for about two hours, police Lt. Dan Brooks said.

Wow, You mean having the police on their way did nothing to save her life. I would have thought for sure that the fact that she had 911 on the phone would protect her. Did she not tell them the cops were on the way? I tell you. Its a good thing she did not have a gun because the bad guy might have taken it away and used it against her.

This is pretty much the cliched beginning, middle, and end to the crime that everybody here mocks as inevitable due to gun control.

I sympathize with the woman and hope her killer is caught.

It's to bad we don't have Mrs. Brady here so we could say "we told you so".

I suppose if we were to sink to the Brady's level, we would always call a press conference and start saying, "Shame, Shame on you Brady Campaign, and all you gun control proponents" everytime this sort of thing happened.

Since, you know, they have no problems calling for a press conference everytime I madman shoots some people, so they can attack guns, and the NRA....

The irony is that she could have owned any number of firearms and could have protected herself.

"When seconds count, the police are only minutes away."

(I don't mean to seem harsh, but the whole thing really sounds fishy.)

instead of staying on the phone, she would have been better served by arming herself with any of the thousands of items she might have pressed into service as a weapon and prepared for the confrontation that was looming.

Hoping the police show up in time is not doing your part in protecting yourself. I might have died in a similar situation, but I would have gone down fighting for my life.

This is the tragic ending the nanny state mentality all but ensures.

may she RIP.

How do you go from "Someone's trying to break in" to BAM BAM BAM to "burglary gone awry"????

Yes, I bet most statistics state that a burglar just wants to take your stuff while you watch while on the phone with 911.:barf:

Thoughts and prayers to her and hers'.

On a serious note, this story makes me worry about my parents.

They live in an area which has recently had 2 high profile kidnappings, by armed thugs which the news knows nothing about other than they are young adults, possibly Hispanic or Caucasian. We've had multiple murders, where people have been gunned down for no real reason, in the past few weeks as well, thanks to the influx of gangs like MS-13. The area I live in isn't much better, but I've got a cruiser-ready gun easily within reach should SHTF.

My mom has told me she is scared by all of this, and that she was talking to the neighbors about it. She said that one of them was thinking about buying a gun, but then decided there was no need to do so because there's a cop living on the block (I'm not LE, or anything close, but I don't think that they wake off-duty officers for 911 calls, do they?) :banghead:

I told my mom that they should consider buying a gun, only to have my dad, a hardcore anti who truly believes that all guns should be banned, start yelling at me, going into how I should know that guns make you 40% more likely to be killed by a gun, and that I should know that as a medical student (thanks Kellerman!), and how I'm incredibly irresponsible for even suggesting to my mother that they buy a gun.

Things like this story really make me worry about them. It's a 1 in a million thing, but it's potentially preventable. You wear a seatbelt every day, why not look out for your safety from thugs and other scum of the earth?

Lets ask her husband how he feels about having a weapon to protect himself and his family now. My wife knows how to use every pistol I own and any criminal that thinks she is an easy target has a major wakeup call if they try to make a victim out of her.

This is a very sad story for this lady and her family, my sympathy goes to them. More proof that all law abiding citizens must learn to defend for themselves, and not depend on law enforcement.

If they ever catch the criminal, I am certain we will find out it wasn't his first rodeo and he was a product of the revolving door policy in our legal system.

Dial 911 after the smoke clears.

This is a real tragedy that most likely has little to do with California gun laws. I think that a very low percentage of people really think that crap can happen to them.

A lot of people have no idea how many real POS are running about in our society.

My prayers for the husband and family.

Unless this poor woman tried to legally acquire a firearm within the last 10 days of her life, then California’s laws had little to do with her murder.

~G. Fink

We should not blame her death on the CA gun laws, but the story can and should be used to point out the fallacy that 911 will save you.

Very sad

It just shows how guns are a deeper issue...as always.

-THR members own firearms, therefore feel security and live with the consequences.
-Non-THR members don't own firearms, because of personal preferences and live with the consequences.

This happened basically down the street from a few gunstores I frequent in the area. I mean come on, we don't know all the facts but we seem to know enough, a locked bedroom door, a call to 911 AFTER making sure a gun was in the hand and at least she would have had a good fighting chance.

How can the antis say a gun would not have been needed or good to have in this instance?

I saw that on the news and considered posting it yesterday. A great reminder that self defense is a person's own responsibility.

She thought a phone would protect her, had time to go and retrieve a phone, and time to sit there for awhile calling the police.
That same time spent retrieving a firearm and she may have lived, or at least left some of the burglars dead or injured with DNA evidence (thier blood) at the scene.

In fact a few shots fired and they may have simply fled in the face of armed resistance.
It might not have even been news worthy with nobody injured and just an unsuccessful attempt as happens daily around the nation.

There is many other outcomes possible if she was responsible for her own defense. Instead 911 was plan A, and there was no plan B.

The irony is that this will only happen to a small percentage of people. Unfortunately, the small percentage to which this will happen is far more likely to be made up of those who think it can't. Those who know it CAN happen to them are far less likely to have it happen to them.

It still can- otherwise, we wouldn't have so many stories about robbers and killers getting shot. It's just less likely as you take more precautions.

Honestly I wish everyone in the country were prepared so that robbers FEAR finding someone home because they are armed and will defend themselves (as was once the case) instead of what we have now.

I suppose if we were to sink to the Brady's level, we would always call a press conference and start saying, "Shame, Shame on you Brady Campaign,

I don't see why that would be sinking at all. This is a real problem and pointing out the need for a gun in that situation is a real solution that does save lives.

True, California law did not stand in the way of that lady possessing a firearm, but propaganda machines like the Brady campaign warp peoples thinking and contribute to citizen disarmament regardless of law.
