okay to bring gun or not? I dont think so, but my friends dont believe me.

what is another campsite that allows firearms? we are in houston, tx and want to get a camping group together.

any ideas?

thanks

For the moment most of the Grand Canyon is a National Park so firearms are not allowed.

As part of a credit card bill earlier in the year concealed carry laws will match those of the state where the park is located. That doesn't become law until May 2010.

There are bits of the canyon that are not in the National Park, but not much.

So for now, it's illegal.

well, know any other places we can fly to that allow pistols?
just want to go hiking and camping for a week at the most.

TexasRifleman: Probably a typo, but you probably meant February 2010, which is 9 months after the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 was signed (certain other provisions, where specifically noted, have different enactment dates).

You cannot CCW. Yet.

We do not advocate breaking the law here. You may bring a firearm onto NPS grounds, but it must be properly secured for now (basically making it inaccessible/unusable)...I admittedly do not know how a backpacker would properly secure the firearm.

No, not a typo, I probably have it wrong. I thought it was one year after passage but I didn't look it up. I'm sure you are correct.

As for the OP, look into Big Bend State Park in Texas. Not the NP, the state one. Some rough country but lots of primitive camping and hiking.

Concealed carry is allowed in Texas State Parks if you have a permit.

If you have not had a chance to see the Grand Canyon, I'd camp east of Flagstaff in the Coconino National Forest and drive to the Canyon as a side trip.

Guess I've had a chance to see a few places in my life and the Grand Canyon was very impressive. Take Hwy 180 out of Flagstaff for some nice scenery along the way.

Arizona is of course, gun friendly and there's plenty of room in that forest. I've seen deer and the tracks of mountain lions. No bears so far. I've taken either my .44 Mag or my 10mm with me.

I have been making the most of the state parks in Utah, and some friends and myself are going to have an open carry party in Feb in Zion National Park on the weekend open carry is legal.

Go to the Grand Canyon next spring/summer, you can open carry if you want. Check to make sure, but I'm pretty sure whatever permit you have that lets you carry in AZ will let you carry in MT, WY, and ID, meaning, ALL of Yellowstone.
