WITHOUT making a straw purchase, is it possible for a 19 year old in texas to buy a handgun? Inheritence is out, but a few people have mentioned that it might be legal in a private FTF sale, but I have yet to see concrete proof of this fact. Is there a website with current texas gun laws, and can I legally buy in a private sale, a handgun?

No. By Federal statute, you must be 21 to buy a handgun.

Wrong, sir, wrong! Federal laws merely stipulate that a federally licensed dealer may not sell a handgun or handgun ammunition to anybody under 21. State laws govern possession of handguns and purchase of handguns from non-FFLs. I don't know the law in Texas, but in Michigan you can own a handgun when you are 18. You just can't by one from an FFL.

I know your allowed to have one, as through inheritence and such, but I have no idea about private sales. Obviously a gun store is out as per federal law, but my question is about texas law governing the private sale of a handgun to someone under 21. Packing.org isn't working and google has yet to turn up any solid info.

I'm laughing and crying right now.....

the info you need is right here

hehe. I had to go to the enemy to find out.

the important part:

JUVENILE POSSESSION
Are minors restricted from possessing guns? Partial

Texas - State law generally prohibits public possession of a handgun without a concealed weapon permit (CCW), effectively preventing public possession of handguns by anyone under 21 unless they are engaged in certain approved activities. But the law does not apply to possession of handguns by juveniles on private property even if they don't have parental permission and it does not restrict possession of rifles and shotguns (including assault weapons).

JUVENILE SALE
Is it illegal to sell guns to kids? Yes

State law restricts selling or giving firearms to juveniles under 18, except for supervised loans of firearms or for limited lawful activities (such as hunting).

I would also like to congradulate our friends in Texas for their impressive D- from the Brady campaign. With a little more work, you might finally get that F. Arkansas, where I live, can only pull off a D. We need to get together and figure out what laws we can pass that will get us both down to F level. We need to get together with Florida and Alaska to find out what we need to do.

Here's is the ATF sumary of Texas gun laws. I see no law prohibiting a person 18 years old or older from buying a handgun from a non-FFL.
