machetes are $5 - $15 range (picked up 2 today), whereas Cold Steel kukhuris (sp?) are in the $80 to $100 range? The look like they're built the same, so I can only surmise it's the machining involved in making a curved (vs. a straight) blade?

I suspect the steel's different, for one thing. Machetes tend to be made from thin, medium- to high-carbon stuff, like 1050 or 1075. That kind of steel isn't expensive. Grinding edge bevels on a stamped-out piece of thin steel wouldn't take much time or money, compared to grinding out a large blade that's made from much thicker stock.

Perhaps CS sees a chance to mark up their kukhris more than their machetes? Meaning that customers will pay more, so CS charges more.

Just my $.02

Dirty Bob

Machetes are a low-cost, high-volume product in many developing countries all over the world (Knifecenter's website says CS's come from South Africa). You can get them dirt cheap by the shipping container from any number of overseas manufacturers. The kukri is a much, much less common item and CS probably has to pay a lot more to have them made - they may have had to help set up production for these things. Plus, CS knows that kukris have more "weapon-appeal" to rich Americanos than a plain old machete, so they probably build in more of a profit margin for the kukris.

It's not all smoke and mirrors. As Bob points out, the machete steel is probably as cheap as it comes and the kukris have more metal that has to be machined/finished.

Many CS knives use not-so-great steel. The price tells the story, although I wouldn't trust the more expensive ones either unless I knew what they were made of.

The machetes are SK-5 and made from thin, flat stock. The kukri's are made from Carbon V via stock removal (I could be wrong on this). So not only are the materials different, the manufacturing process is very different. Regardless, it is a good machete!

For that much money. Get a Himalayan Imports Khukuri. Will kick CS's ass when it comes to beauty, durability and plain ruggedness.

Himalayan Import's Khukuri's are made the old fashion way. A guy, a hammer, hot coals and an anvil. They are without doubt the best Khukuris in the world.

I should know, I have a bunch.
