Huh. Some people...
Oh yeah my friend said that a national guard unit from Alaska was boarding a bus to go to mexico for the war we had there and had muskets instead of m-16 rifles for the same reason.

give me a break I really love the internet now

Back on topic, just because Grandpa served in WWI and for the age he looks in the pics could he also have be in the army during the spanish american war? Looks rather Teddy Rosevelt-ish to me? Also looks more like Cavelry versus infantry.

That looks more like a just pre-WWI uniform to me. Spanish American war uniforms looked much different.

You can request a copy of his records. I'm not sure if you'd go through the National Archives or the military for service records that old. You can do it as a relative or file a FOIA request if you can't prove the relationship.

Do a search for genaology related websites and forums. Someone there will know how to request his records and can give you some advice on the process.

There is always a chance the records no longer exist, but it's always worth a shot.

Proving the relationship ought to be easy enough. I have his name and I'm the only person with that name in the country.

I'll go ahead and bump this to the top to give the evening guys a crack at it.

Hey Guys, It does look a lot like a Krag-Jorgensen but for the Butt plate. Thr butt plate is more like the Enfield US service rifle M1917 (pattern '17) The Krag has a safety in front of the trigger guard and the Enfield doesn't. the Krag has a more "scooped" shape to the butt. The Enfield has the straighter butt. The bolt handle does look more Krag like. Donno! Blitz
