If I go to a liquor store, will they sell me an empty keg shell? I know that when you bring them back, you get a 10 dollar credit for a trade in, but will they actually sell me one to have? Tyler

What is a keg shell?
A keg is a large thing that holds beer. My family has been in the bar business and I've never heard of such a thing.
Personally, I wouldnt own or shoot at one. For $10, I think there are better ideas for targets.

Keg shell is just the empty keg. I'm in college and when people go buy kegs from the local liquor store, they ask you in you have any keg shells because you can get a credit towards your next keg. I guess that's just what they call them around here. BIG BLUE

Weird. Must be a west coast thing.
Anyhow, the credit comes from the fact that there was a $10 or $15 deposit paid on the keg when it was first purchased. I think you might be better off going to a machine shop and asking them if they have any scrap mild steel you could use for plinking on. IIRC, kegs are made of aluminum.

Let me guess...take the empy keg out in the middle of nowhere...shoot the dickens outta it and then it just lies there. Right?

And, please don't BS me by saying, "Oh, we'd take it with us and put it in some dumpster somewhere. Or beside the curb for trash pickup." I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard that and we all know it is very, very rarely true.
I happen to live out in the middle of nowhere and I see, day after day, new stuff lying around in desert areas where someone just wants to shoot stuff up and leave it lay and, believe it or not, it gives ALL of us shooters a bad name and a black eye.
So, if you do take it out and shoot it up please dispose of it rather than leaving it behind.

Actually, even a thoroughly ventilated keg would have some scrap value, so probably won't languish in the middle of nowhere. I prefer to shoot things that aren't useful to me or others, or that are designed for shooting. And then I remove the evidence.
NavajoNPaleface, I'm with you on the ballistic trash issue. I get smokin mad when I see waste left by thoughtless folk. No one likes to find a newly created dumpground, and there is no excuse for shooters who leave messes. We don't know BBED though, and I'm betting he's got more class than that.
And if he was fixin' to shoot a keg with beer in it, now, that's just wrong on so many levels...

Thanks, and you're right, I do have a little more class. The reason that I thought a keg would be a great target is because 1) it will make noise when you hit it and 2) it won't totally be torn to pieces after multiple rounds, so when I get done shooting it, I can throw it in the back of my truck and use it again and again.
P.S. Everytime I go to the range, I usually leave with more targets than I came with. People leave all kinds of stuff and since I can't afford those nice, expensive steel reactive targets, I like to shoot what is available AND inexpensive. A 55 gallon drum would work well too.

Yup, should in theory have every bit the scrap value it had when new.... bullet holes don't remove material, well, unless you're shooting something *nice*

Check (livestock) feed stores for empty 55 gallon drums. I get mine for 5.00 - 7.50 here in Texas.

I have several of those small one use helium tanks they sell with the party balloon kits. They ring really nice when you hit them.

Actually, they're made of stainless steel. I've got three that I've cut the top out of. One is my pot for crawfish boils, the other two I use for home brewing.
Try calling a local brewery. They do get rid of old, damaged kegs. Homebrew supply shops also occasionally sell used kegs. Probably more than you want to pay for a target, though.

Each tanks is certified for so many years and then it is garbage, if it is not recertified or has the old style valve. They set them out by the garbage, but the trash guys won't take them, unless you can prove they are empty. A few holes in the steel tank, would do just fine... Be aware of ricochets (shooting at round steel tank).

I've shot up several kegs (empty of course) and find it to be great fun for the reasons you stated BBED. Heed Dr.Who's advice "Be aware of ricochets."
I would not be worried too much about a ricochet hitting the shooter, it would others or property a distance a way off to the side. I have seen these shot in a ravine and saw ground movment off to the side after impact... use common sense...

Yeah, kegs are illegal in Utah unless you're a licenced alcohol dealer.

The nicest ring I've heard is rifles on an old 60 pound nitrous tank. Kind of like a bell hit by a sledge.. I imagine they're not as easy to find for most people, though. A little more value in that tank than a keg
If you really want a keg call around to your local liquor stores and see who has the cheapest deposit on a keg, get your favorite brew, and don't bring the keg back. That's the way to go. There's a place by me that only has $10 deposits on 1/2 kegs, while another place down the street is $20. So it's worth calling around.

Just call you local beer distributors.
Ask them what they do to dispose of their damaged kegs.
You just might get a few given to you.
