I am sure that given five shots at five pennies, I would hit at least one: today.
For the last year or two I have been shooting rifles almost exclusively. If given a couple days of pistol shooting to get tuned up, I could hit more (on a regular basis).
When I shoot out in the desert, I like to shoot at golf balls. I throw the ball far enough that it is a challenge to hit and then shoot at it with a handgun. Obviously, when you hit it, it rolls or bounces away. The only rule to this game is that as long as you can still see the ball, you have to shoot at it from where you are: you can't get any closer to make the shot easier. If you shoot the ball and it sails out of sight, you walk towards it. The instant you see the ball, you have to shoot from that point and can walk no closer. This is especially fun when shooting with other people because this adds a speed element into the mix: you have to hit it before someone else does or the ball disappears. By the same token, it is fun to knock the ball right out from in front of someone else's sights. When you knock the ball out of sight and then walk up to find it, the first guy starts shooting and everyone else has to try to see the ball before the first guy shoots it out of sight again.
This may not be any kind of comparision, but I think if I can hit a golf ball regularly between 25 -50 yards, I ought to be able to hit a penny at 10 yards. The last time I did the golf ball thing was 3-4 months ago. Using some kind of 9mm handgun (I don't remember what) I hit the golf ball four with four consecutive shots, starting at maybe 20-25 yards. After the fourth shot, the ball was in pieces.
