Can you smash an AK magazine into the earth for prone shooting or will it cause malfunctions?

If everything the receiver is bent strait and the mag well isn't too oversized you'll have no issues. Even if those items are present there is still a good chance it'll function fine.

YES. :)

Rock-n-lock is a very secure magazine fitment. But, you are also jamming the mag floor plate into the dirt, which means you will get "stuff" into the magazine. Which will eventually follow the rounds to the insides of the AK. Now, that could be an issue. Smashing non-metallic AK mags into the dirt is not an issue if one has a huge supply in one's logistics train.

Mostly, though, the 30 round mag is a bit higher than could be comfortable for many prone humans.

Unless you are a giraffe, you will have issues getting low and getting a sight picture due to the size and shape of that magazine. One of the many reasons I don't like the AK, but not even in the top 5.

The Russian version of "Baghdad Prone" uses the charging handle as a rudimentary sight, if one is that low to the ground and stuck with an AK.

You are not supposed to smash the magazine, if my English serves me. If you smash anything on AK, it will certainly earn you a punishment from your commander. However, you can monopod on the magazine. I downloaded the official 1967 AKM manual from the manufacturer's website, which has a captioned illustration for the practice.

Yes you can and it will not cause malfunctioning. The spetznaz do push-ups on the AK with the mag supporting their weight.
