I want to add night sights to my new S&W 1911, however, I want big dots for my older eye's, what would you recommend? also, what color for older eye's?

How hard or easy to install?

I saw some sights on a new S&W 9mm, 1911 and they were red tubes, wow, awsome for me but they were not night sights.

Those were fiber optic type sights. Now as an older feller I can only offer my opinion on this matter. Some "Night Sights" are extremely difficult to see during daylight hours. They are designed to glow in the dark to be seen at night. That leads to the question of how much shooting you plan to do in the dark. Then there is the issue of is your target going to glow in the dark for you to see it through glowing night sites.

The long and short of it is, in my opinion the only thing Night Sights are good for is to help you find your gun in the dark. I think you would be better served with some less expensive larger sights and spend the money saved on ammunition to enjoy shooting your gun during the daytime!

A Colt I bought used had night sights on it. I found them over-rated and replaced them with a Heinie Slant Pro rear and orange fiber optic front. Works better for my old eyes.

I rarely shoot in the dark though, so YMMV, and if it's night sights you really want, I hope you find some that work for you.

No personal experience, but there is a Tru-Glo sight that utilizes fiber optic and tritium.

BTW, total darkness is not needed to make at least some use of night sights. I want all the advantages I can get.

my personal favorites sights for a 1911 are the Heine Slant Pro and the 10-8 Performance...the Heine can even be had in a model called "50+" for older eyes.

Heine offers their Straight-8 which is an excellent sight and faster to acquire a sight picture than with a 3-dot system.

my personal choice would be a single night-sight dot on the front sight

Meprolight night sights have white rings encircling the tritium ampoules so you can see them in the daytime.

They came installed on my Kimber Raptor they are are great sights, especially for my old eyes.

be aware that Tru-Glo sights are a great idea, compromised by poor execution. the rods have a tendency to break and fall out, while the mounts have been known to be "soft"
