Liberal MP faces angry gun owners
WebPosted Jan 31 2003 07:53 AM EST

WOODSTOCK – Hunters in New Brunswick are challenging the federal government to abolish the firearms registry.

Thursday night, 200 gun owners gathered at a public meeting in Woodstock organized by Liberal Tobique-Mactaquac MP Andy Savoy. Most said the Liberal party had betrayed them.

Hunters and gun enthusiasts from McAdam to Mactaquac gathered at the meeting, armed only with their anger. They vented their frustration with the gun registry and the federal government responsible for it.

Harland Cook is from New Maryland, just outside Fredericton. "As a gun owner, you vote for the party that's going to support you. And the Liberals are not supporting me. And they never have."

Andy Savoy was elected only two years ago, in the time after his party created the firearms registry. Despite that, several people tried to challenge him about the government's decision to create the registry anyway. Including former Alliance candidate Adam Richardson, who ran against Savoy in the last election.

Richardson spoke out during the meeting: "Can we have your commitment tonight that you will not vote for one more red penny towards the gun law?"

Savoy replied: "Good question, I knew I'd get that. What I can tell you is that until we make a review I really can't pass judgement on it."

Savoy says he supports gun control but he has concerns about how the firearms registry is being managed.

The federal auditor general recently revealed that the gun registry will cost taxpayers a billion dollars. The program is now under review, to determine whether it is working, and whether taxpayers are getting value for the ballooning cost of the program. Savoy says he's waiting for the results to take a stand on the issue.

Do you think the taxpayers would stand for it?

But you guys have been standing for high taxes for years.

GST and PST, combined, are close to 20%, if not higher, a good bit of which is supposed to fund health care.

Cigarettes were sky high with taxes years ago, and could only be worse than when I was last up there, 10 years ago, when, incidentally, they were doing a series on cigarette smugling from the US on CBC.

Gas was high. Again taxes, since Canada has enough petroleum to export.

I worked with a Canadian or three, and several were telling me about income taxes around 40%, and these were grad students at the time, so not a great deal of income for such a high tax rate. They still love that health care, though it stands to reason that the tax hit exceeds the cost of most insurance premiums for all but the biggest welfare cases.

No offense intended, but what's an extra billion to a country with one of the highest per capita national debts around?

As for Americans, to be fair, I think we get suckered with crap like this too and I don't think we'd be any better about fighting it, but at least we aren't there yet.

:cuss: politician!

Been in office 2 years and yet doesn't have an opinion or position on one of the most controversial issues in Canada today.

Yeah, a real "representative of the people" to be sure.

:scrutiny: :fire:

Savoy knows political non-speak very well. Now, vote him out of office guys.
