Does anyone else think the top of glistam's piece looks like a dog's head? Maybe I'm just missing my lab.

Great cane !

That's just the raw piece, Deltaboy.

But I do have an update. Turns out you can steam bend hornbeam. I took that piece you see and stuck the end in a big pot of boiling water for 20 minutes. Then I pressed the end hard into the floor and wedged the other end under the edge of my counter, leaving it for 24 hours. The result is a roughly 90 degree curve, a "half-crook" I guess, which I have seen in some English and Italian sticks. That piece is from a fresh green tree, so it will have to be braced and dried for about a year.

I also cut a new piece from a dead tree yesterday, so it is mostly dry. This one (below) was a branch growing from a trunk which I cut as one piece, and now I'm slowly whittling the trunk remnant into a "derby" or "fritz" handle. I'm many years out of practice with wood carving, but it's making progress.

It looks a little like a wolfs head. With some delicate carving it could look a lot like a wolfs head BTW, does anyone remember Barnibus Collin's cane?

wow this thread brings back memories. The canes in the pics above have been done for 3-4 months. The bark has been removed, everything sanded, stained and sealed.

I'm sorry to report the "derby" head one I kinda messed up. The angle of the handle isn't quite level and so it puts too much strain on the muscles going to the crook of the thumb. It's good for short walks but I don't carry it as much anymore.

The other one as I mentioned has been steam-bent into a half-crook. I left most of the under-bark on this one so it's darker and has the muscly look of hornbeam. It is lighter than the derby but much more comfortable to hold. I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow.

Here's the finished canes previously mentioned in this thread. Both are American Hornbeam and have the same stain, but the on the right I left most of the underbark on.
