so i'm reloading 308 for an m1a

just wondering if there is a performance difference between bullets with a cannelure on them and those that are smooth. also do i need to crimp either style of bullets?

To what I am told, You really do not need to crimp with a box magazine or a single shot. If your using a tubular magazine, Then yes. A crimp would be needed.

If it has a cannelure on it, That is where the maufacturer recommends for their bullet to be seated and crimped to prevent set back. If you have a smooth style bullet, I only know of the Lee FCD that would place a crimp on those. I have done that with Berrys bullets.

I do not crimp my M1A loads or M1 and AR loads either.

Bullets do not have to be seated to the cannelure just because the cannelure is there. I use Hornady's 150 fmj in my Garand loads. The cannelure is set for M1A/M14 length and not the M1.

You won't find a cannelure on any match bullet. Neck tension should be more than enough to keep the bullet from moving.
