I have a gunvault pistol safe that stopped working so I called them and took a chance on a warranty even though it was out of warranty. They replaced the safe and mailed me a new one. A week after I got it, I get a call from the moving company about the safe being delivered. I figured they hasn’t updated their records so I ignored it. Last Monday the new safe arrived. A 600 pound Cannon 64 gun 60 minute fire safe! Paperwork said covered under warranty.

Being an honest guy I called. They were embarrassed and said the moving company would be in touch to take the safe. I told them I’m not paying for shipping and they said of course I wouldn’t have to.

11 days later and no call. I check out some videos on this model. Okay reviews. Nothing stellar. One of the guys said his had a dent when he received it and he called Cannon. They said they’d replace it under warranty. He asked how he was going to get the other back to them and they told him to keep it.

So this safe is a step up from my StackOn, but it’s way bigger than I wanted. I know people say to go as big as you can but my choices of where to put a safe we limited. My current StackOn is in my daughters closet because I put it in there before she was born. She wants her closet back so the only other place I can put it is the corner of my office in the basement. Bolted down of course. You wouldn’t be able to see the safe from the window since it’s on the same wall in the corner.

So I either keep this safe or I sell it for $600 or so(they got for like $900 normally). It’s still in the box. Never even opened. I like the Fort Knox Maverick safe. Bigger than my StackOn but far stronger than the Cannon. It would take up less room in the office and I can get it with a dial combination. I don’t like or trust electrician locks on safes (that’s what broke in the gunvault). The value of the guns in the safe is probably in the $5000 range.

So keep a free Canon or sell it to offset the cost of the Fort Knox

I’d keep it. While some are better than others, no residential safe will stop a determined professional. However the majority of burglars will be reluctant to mess with stealing things that are in a safe... especially if you have alarms or other deterrents that make them want to hurry up and get out.

I bought a cannon 80 gun wide body about three years ago from Tractor Supply to replace four stack on cabinets. When it was delivered the guys showed me it had a dent from a forklift at the bottom. The safe was on sale for $995, delivery and installation in my garage was $250. I called Tractor Supply and the manager asked me to bring her a picture. I did, and TS knocked $350 off the price (pre-tax) for the dent.

Always buy bigger that you’ll think you’ll need. This safe once had plenty of room... in three years it’s almost filled. (Funny how that happens ;).)

Stay safe.
