Although I started Black Powder shooting with a gifted T/C Renegade cap lock, the predominance of my BP shooting has been with flintlocks. Over the years, I have acquired, through gifts and exceptional deals, several percussion arms. My knowledge of such is very lacking. They take multiple different size caps and I know that this depends on the nipple/cone used. I have a decent supply of Remington 11 and CCI 11 caps but less than 100 each of CCI 10, Remington 10 and RWS 1075. With caps being hard to get, is there a brand of nipple/cone that I could switch to that would use the CCI and Rem. 11 caps?

Most percussion rifles take a #11 cap. #10 caps are generally for BP revolvers. If the cap doesn't fit on the nipple properly, just chuck the nipple in a drill press or electric drill and hold a fine tooth file along the taper of the nipple to reduce the diameter a smidgen ( technical term) so that the cap fits.

Well, when you say smidgen, that’s like 2.5 twiffers isn’t it? Unless you use the metric twiffer…

My revolvers all fit nicely with CCI #10, but I have very few of those and lots of # 1. It looks like Slixshot nipples will take # 11, so I may just have to buy a few sets of those. Since the chart shows CCI 10s are the smallest diameter, reducing the size of the present cones would be going the wrong direction. Thanks for the replies.

What I have found, is that the CCI#11's fit tightly, perfectly, or even too tight on most (or all I have tried) cones. That is a good thing for me, as then as Fyrstyk says I just adjust the cones for a perfect fit. In my area, or even online, CCI#11's are the most easy to find. That has solved my cap fitting problems.

Having said that, the CCI's are made from a thicker material than I would like, but, no big deal. Sometimes they don't fragment and fall off well, or as much as I would like, on my revolvers.

I have SlixShots on my 1862PP, and the CCI's fit perfectly on it.

My Pietta 1860 Army doesn't like CCI #11's (too loose) and they fall off of the wife's Uberti 1862 Pocket Navy. Good to know on the Slixshot nipples as I am ordering a set for both of the pistols. Thanks.

CCI #11 are too loose and have to be pinch fit on my guns. CCI #10 is what I prefer.

I had to pinch CCI#11's on my 1860, but then I got another set from TOW and they were just right. Whatever I put on my Remington, I forget now, but they were too tight, and I turned them down to perfect fit.

The R&S nips are a perfect fit for the CCI's too. I wonder if Pietta cones are a bit on the small side?

Could be. My Uberti dragoon took CCI #11 caps now that I think about it.
