Not sure where to put this. Has any one herd of or read the story about Carbine Williams? There is a movie about him staring Jimmy Stewart. I thought it was quite interesting and wanted to share it with every one. Google, Carbine Williams. I belive you will enjoy the read.

The movie was very entertaining and contained about two words of the truth. The gentleman did not invent the M-1 carbine. He did come up with a workable action using the floating chamber principle (no, he didn't invent it, but he made it work).

This is not to disparage the man at all. He went on to a stellar career as a firearms designer, all self taught. He had a hard start in live and "made good". His is the story more young people should hear and try to emulate.

Invent the entire action or not, I believe he made it work while incarcerated, with very limited tools. If this is true, its still impressive. I liked the movie and hopefully someone will come along with some good facts. Subscribed to this one...

There is a great book about Mr Williams that tells the whole story of his amazing life, accomplishments, and decisions both good and bad. the book is called Carbine by Ross E Beard.

The movie makes it appear that he did all of his firearms work in prison. He did impress prison officials with his mechanical skills after designing and producing some working firearms. They were impressed and worked to have his sentence reduced. After getting out he worked at various times for Remington, Colt, Winchester, and the US ordnance dept. He does own several patents and was instrumental in several important rifle designs.

Hollywood movies....:oops: They may be entertaining -- and James Stewart was a great actor -- but they entertain, not ejumakate.
I like Santa Fe Trail and They Died With Their Boots On, for example, but both films contain historical twists, omissions, tomfoolery and , well, IT JUST DIDN'T HAPPEN THAT WAY.

He's an interesting case, certainly, which probably deserves to be brought up every time we have one of these debates about zero tolerance and felons in possession of firearms.

Anecdote in old gunzine article about Williams.
He undertook to build a .22 LR conversion for a machine gun, using the floating chamber system as seen on the Colt SM ACE and the Remington 550.
He delivered it in three weeks, saying that two of those weeks were spent learning to use his wife's sewing machine and making the little bitty MG belt.
