I LOVE Seafoam !!! Hmmm.... never used it as a gun cleaner though... but, I'll have to give it a try now. And... the aerosol version of the same is "Deep Creep"

I agree. I like my guns to look "well used" (that is different from "worn out" or "dirty"). If they accumulate some markings and carbon scoring, then that is par for course. Just like my guitars, I like my guns to have a little "mojo" and patina. The only time I would use such products is if I am cleaning the firearm for either presentation as gift, or in preparing it for sale.

CraigC, I'd be interested in seeing what JB Bore Paste would do to the other end of that rod. The container is plastered with "non-abrasive" all over it and is advertised to shine your bore. I use it on some every once in a while (Garands, etc) but more often in the hot-shots (6mm Rem & similar bolt guns), plus JB Bore Shine in those. It turns the patch black, but they insist it will not harm/abrade the bore. My experience has been all good, but just curious if anyone has anything to add on JB... :scrutiny:

I would personally have to use a lead away cloth on a stainless surface before I'd concede it's truly abrasive, if used as directed.

Probably the same result. I started to order some and try it.

It's either abrasive or it isn't. The material and usage are irrelevant. Like I said in the other thread, try rubbing a surface with your finger and count the strokes. I sat here and rubbed my mouse pad for 15 seconds and counted 50 strokes. Double that for moving in both directions and multiply by four and you have 400rpm. So in effect, my little test simulated two minutes of hand rubbing. You act like I was running it on a buffer at 3000rpm for several minutes.

I agree with you. There is "Mechanical" polishing (as in with an "Abrasive") and then there is "Chemical" polishing (as in how it reacts to a material on a molecular level).

Doing one test on a piece of aluminum and then proclaiming that it's going to behave the same on a completely different metal... which is much harder and of a different composition? C'mon...

Lemme ask this too... if this product is "polishing" the metal... is it not either "filling" the machining marks and/or pores of the metal, or "levelling" them? If so... would not the "fouling" then tend to adhere less easily over time/use? Sort of a "the more you use it, the less you need to do so" line of thinking? Think of it this way... does not a well "polished/waxed" car stay cleaner (longer) than one that isn't?

Does not "shooting in your new barrel's bore" smooth it and cause it to foul less and become more accurate? Sure... eventually, that same process wears out the barrel... but, the enjoyment of doing so is part of the whole point... isn't it? I'd suggest that shooting your gun will "wear it out" far more quickly than "cleaning" it will

I've been using "Lead Away" on my model 686 since I bought it new in '84. My gun is "clean" in appearance, but it isn't polished like a mirror... but, I'm not using it on the gun's surface every day either.

A little cleaning and polishing a Blackhawk. No need to take it down this far after one time.

+1 on the Hoppes 9 and brass brush. I just use a brass toothbrush type brush you get at Home Depot/Lowes. Lowes had a 3 brush set brass, ss, and nylon on clearance for less than $1. Of course the ss brush won't touch my GP100.
