Will someone tell me what thread to post this question.

I am 5' 7", slight build (read no gut), and have a carry question. In the Fall and winter, I have no problem carrying my Glock 19 inside the waist band. However, in 80+ degrees, a sweater is a bit much. I know I can carry with a shirt not tucked in. But there are situations where that is not good dress code. Specifically, in church.

I am confident that the congregation in my church would go nuts if they knew I carried. But read the news. Bad stuff happens, in churches, good neighborhoods or bad.

Yelling at someone bent on evil "don't do that" I doubt is very effective. Do I have any options besides an ankle holster?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Glock 23 (same size as the 19) I am about the same build as you describe, I have a very hard time properly concealing it in warm weather. I got a S&W 642 for such circumstances and love it. I've tried all sorts of stuff for the 23 but nothing seems to work well for me.

My EDC is my G20, summer, living in the south, humidity is hell, In summer like now I carry a molded black leather Tagua OTB holster and a T-shirt, it's really not that noticeable but another experienced CCL person can tell I'm carrying, I never been asked if was carrying or not.

Check out the budget Kahrs they are perfect for summer carry and if you shoot the Glock 19 well you should be able to shoot these well too. They disappear IWB. The CW9 is my summer carry. Replaced my 642.

I have about the same build and height as the OP as well. I'm not sure the manufacturer, but I think it's 5.11 that makes a compression fit concealed carry undershirt that has these great pockets under the arms (think shoulder holster style) and the shirt is reinforced. I haven't tried one yet, but I know people who carry full size 1911s in them from time to time and they have no problems. I would imagine you should have no problems carrying a G19 in that fashion.

First you'll want to switch to a slimmer gun - I have a friend about your build who carries a Glock 23 just fine - I wear a Kimber Ultra or a Keltec PF-9 and they disappear under anything heaver than a tee-shirt.

I use a tuckable IWB "Mr. Jones" holster by Eric T. Whisnant that I like very much. Find him on facebook here:

or at Hyatt's online here:

you might also consider a SmartCarry http://www.smartcarry.com/ or wearing a blazer to church

I am seriously thinking about the Ruger 9mm single stack. A friend told me to stick with my Glock, because he was impressed that I did very well with it. That said, the single stack may be better than the G 19 for carry. I hear that the G 19 is a superior gun, but I have a number of Rugers that operate just fine.
Input?

The Glock is heads and shoulders above the Ruger. The G19 is one of the great wonder 9mms of all time.

My fav for summer carry is a kel tec pf9. Smaller than most anything out there in 9mm, cheap at around $300 new, and reliable. I have many mags through mine and it has yet to have a ftf/fte or any other mal.

My one con for that gun for summer carry is the trigger resets ALL the way to the front, and there is a click half way there that makes you think the trigger is reset, until you depress it again and nothing happens. Not a biggie to get use to, but definately annoying at first.

Of course, like all things, any good summer carry gun will be less acurate at range and hold less rounds. The better and more concealable it is, the more you notice these things. You have to make your own compromises. Even a 1911 is thin and all, but way heavy and uncomfortable to carry when compared to a featherweight like the pf9. Also, the pf9 can drop right in a decent sized front pocket, allowing you to walk around with your hand in your pocket with a firing grip and look none the wiser. Holster is preferred of course...

I carry a full-size M1911 winter and summer in a tuckable holster of my own design. There are several points:

1. Dress loosely -- get your pants and shirts a bit larger than you normally wear.

2. Get a good belt -- one designed for concealed carry. These belts are much stiffer and keep the gun stabliized.

3. A good holster is a wide holster -- so it spreads the pressure of the gun over more area and "blends in."

4. When you have the gun and holster adjusted to your taste, "blouse" your shirt -- pull out a couple of inches all around and let it hang down naturally.

In church I (my wife) decided I should leave my g23 in the car. I couldn't win the argument so the only thing that isn't noticed is the little Beretta 21A 22LR. If needed maybe I can get off a couple of mags and irritate the bad guy. The dumb thing is almost everyone I know well knows several of us carry almost 24/7.

Go with a Glock 26 carried IWB in the appendix position. Use the short magazine.

Wear a Polo shirt untucked. The rest of the "Christians" in that church can stuff their opinion where it belongs. If they quote Romans 13, take appropriate violent action.

x2 on a snub in the pocket. If I were of slighter build, I'd go for an old school Model 36. That's about as small as .38'd come...I often carry a slightly larger Colt Agent in my front pocket. I find no need for a hoster. I just drop it in and go.

I think revolvers are harder to pocket carry. (But I have smaller pockets then most.)

That's why I went with the SW BG .380 and love it.

Seems like a small semi auto and pocket carry would fit the bill. I've not been impressed at all by the quality of the Kel-Tec PF9. I bought one a while back for my girlfriend and it had the very annoying habit of not firing about every fifth round. It did the same thing with 3 different kinds of ammo and two firing pins with springs. They just sent a whole new slide and barrel after I sent it back to them so I hope that one was just a fluke. We've not tried the new one yet. I just ordered a Diamondback DB 9 and I hope that does better than the Kel Tec. If you're ok with a .380 your options open up quite a bit more.

How about a Sig P238. Fits in my hand completely hidden if needed. Great lil' pocket gun. Other than another sidearm purchase, I'd have to say an IWB style holster you feel comfortable with. And a busy, baggy shirt.

If .380 bothers you, look into the sig 290. not much larger, and 9mm.

Treefrog - how about a compact .380 (like the Kahr) in an ankle holster? After all, you are already sitting down, closer to the pistol, your pants leg will cover it automatically, it something happens, you will be ducking below the pew, giving you an opportunity to pull your weapon.
Sound reasonable?

I'll vote with Vern and Kingpin!

In situations like you describe I use a tuckable IWB holster.

Member Joel here made me this one for my 1911 that lets me carry a full-sized gun in dress pants and a tucked-in button-down shirt without a jacket:

The deep cuts between the pouch of the holster and the belt loops allow me to tuck in my shirt between the gun and pants, and all that shows, if anyone happens to be looking, are the two belt loops.
