A buddy of mine just returned from his third African safari. His PH's always recomend bringing the ammo you plan to use with you since restrictions on purchasing there are quite severe.
On this trip he booked throught Northwest. He flew to Amsterdam and then on to Johanasburg on Northwest's partner airline KLM. He of course checked his guns and ammo all the way throught to his final destination.
As he was boarding the KLM flight he was pulled aside and confronted by Dutch police officers. They had his boxes of .308 and .338 ammo that had been in his luggage. They demanded to see his Dutch permit to possess the ammo. Of course, he had no such paperwork so they they confiscated his ammo and fined him 450 Euros! Luckily, he didn't have to pay before getting on his flight. He is suposed to mail the fine in. Fat chance!
