To all CCL holders out there is there anyplace you do not or would not carry, excluding where it is unlawful to carry and why? Or are you the kind of person that carries everywhere, no matter what?

For example: If I had a CHL I wouldn't carry in say in my Church (I'm really in God's hands at that point anyway) the other would be places where there might be large amounts of drunk people (too unpredictable a situation, hate to have to shoot a drunk).

I myself do not have a CHL but I have carried concealed several times using the Texas travelers provision in the Texas consitution.

It's too bad that the bad guys won't give your church the same reverence that you do.

Life is, according to Judeo-Christian theology, a precious gift from God.

I certainly think it's worth protecting, even in church.

And God helps (keep safe) those who help (keep) themselves (safe). :)

Personally, I carry except where it is a crime. That means, in MN, schools and daycares, courthouses and probably post offices.

It's not a crime to carry past a sign in MN :). It's only a crime if you refuse to leave when asked. Thus, with "concealed means concealed," it's not a problem.

No problem with carrying in church - with the $$$ in collections, it's only a matter of time until some nutball or islamofascist hits a worship service.

I don't carry at the gym . . . no secure lockup, and no need to give the sheeple an eyefull of steel in the locker room. (Please, no bad jokes.)

In buildings at work . . . no. :( They've posted PC30.06 signs at some of the entrances, but not all are covered. So though I couldn't be successfully prosecuted, I'd expect to be fired on the spot.

Otherwise, the only places I don't carry are those prohibited by law.

The shower.

And I'm still trying to figure out how to conceal a .50 AE Desert Eagle in my Speedos when I go swimming.

And don't even get me started on the problems I have when I go to the nudist colony for vacation.

I have only been carrying for about a month and have not quite figured everything out yet. In general I would say that I carry everywhere it is legal. However, as an example on Wednesday I had to appear in court in the AM as an expert witness and then later in the afternoon I had to look at a job in a school. That day I just left my gun at home. THe court is in a fairly bad area and I would like to carry, but I feel that locking my gun in the trunk in a parking garage in a bad neighborhood would be irresponsible. Then a few hours after court I am going into a school, no chance to go home in between. Best to just leave the gun at home. Most days these things are not issues. The other area of concern gets into private residences. One of my wife's closest friends is rabidly anti-gun and has made it clear that she does not want me to carry in her home. The upshot is I just don't go there, but if I did I guess I would respect her request. I have rules in my house and expect people to abide by them, I feel it would be deceptive to do otherwise.

The only legal place I won't carry is at family functions where I would not be able to maintain concealment. ie pool party, etc.

I am partly concerned about anti family members, and also about access of children to the gun if I needed to take it off.

I don't carry at family gatherings because of all the hugs. I'm taller than everyone else in my family, so they'd definitely notice. I just don't want to hear any more comments about "militant" this and "paranoid" that. I just leave it in the car on those occasions. The other place I don't carry is anywhere I'm going to drink. Even though I know I'm perfectly capable of maintaining myself and keeping concealed and all that stuff, the police may not think the same way if I ever have to interact with them  I don't carry in places that have a legal sign...which is only one that I have seen since the law was changed last October.

You ever hear the one about the guy caught in a flood on his rooftop convinced that God would save him?

I'd recommend carrying in church.

I don't carry at work as I drive a courtesy shuttle for a car repair place. While the owners are hunters and overall very nice people to work with, I would not want to risk the possiblilty of exposing my carry weapon to a customer while in the van. I have to park across the street at a shopping center parking lot so I don't leave my pistol in the truck either. I only work part-time so I don't have a problem with it.

I don't carry at my family get togethers as any of the houses have enough guns and ammo to defend a small fort. :D

I don't carry where it is not legal but otherwise, I have my pistol on me or in the car.

i can count on one hand the number of places i have gone in the last year that required me to be unarmed, and i'd still have enough fingers left over to thumb wreste and pick my nose.

The only time I don't carry to places that are legal is sometimes when I go to church and wear a tucked in shirt. That's just because I haven't yet bought a good tuckable holster and don't currently have the money to do so. I had a Smartcarry at one time but it didn't work out for me so I took advantage of the 60 day trial period. Just a few weeks back there was a well-publicized incident in Houston where two gunmen busted into a church right on Sunday morning. I don't expect anything to go down in church but churches certainly aren't immune to violence and crime.

Gulogulo,

Why not go ahead and get a CHL? Relying on the traveling provision of 46.03 can be a risky thing in that neither the Texas legislature nor the courts have defined what a "traveler" is. The provision is VERY narrow and basically any prosecution of this law leaves it up to the jury as to whether you were a traveler or not. Some things the courts have said is that once you reach your destination you are no longer a traveler, staying in another place overnight does NOT make you a traveler, if you stop somewhere else for business or pleasure that is not part of your original journey then you lose traveler status. I'm told that crossing from one county to another will often qualify you as a traveler but if you live close to the county line then it might not. It's a very nebulous thing to count on to protect you legally. My uncle, who is a lieutenant investigator for the Harris County (Houston) District Attorney, strongly advised me to not rely on any kind of Texas travel law as a defense to carrying a gun. Anyway...that's my little speech about it. I'm currently trying to get my dad to go ahead and take his CHL course because he travels a lot and usually carries protection. He just drags his feet on it though...I think he doesn't want to take the time to do it.

For leaving your carry in the car where do you keep it? in the trunk? would you consider installing one of those small pistol safes in your trunk and just bolt it to the body (as you have to do to transport AWs in CA) or do you think if you need to go to those lengths you shouldn't bring it?

The body of a cleaning woman was recently discovered in a church here in Orlando. The bad guy who killed her apparently came t burglarize the church, and was surprised to find her inside.

i carry at family gatherings; when they hug ME they
make sure I am carrying!

oh, I welcome patients who carry...
in fact I give them a discount!

DigMe Quote: Why not go ahead and get a CHL?

I am a big time procrastinator. I voted for Bush because he said he would pass it if elected. Meant to do it then. Never had. I get the money to do it and spend it on ammunition instead.

Also, I feel OK about going around most of the time unarmed. Places that I know are dangerous, well I won't go there. I've always had the mindset if you know you need a gun to go someplace, well you probably shouldn't go. I don't really want to get out and feel naked if I leave home without it. I know, I know stupid reason.

Right now as it is, I will not stay anywhere (home, hotel , camping or a realatives house) unless I have a firearm with me. Helps me sleep at night. Man's home is his castle type thing. I know if get a CHL and use it, it will become a 24/7 thing. That's quite a commitment. One thing I've recently gathered about CC holders is you cannot be casual about it. It is a mind set...maybe even a lifestyle.

I know one day, God willing, I will get my license. I have too many friends pushing me not to get one. But they aren't that serious about carrying, they have licenses but rarely carry. For me it needs to be all or nothing not just a passing thing I do. I cannot take it lightly.

In another thread someone said CC is not an extention of your gun hobby. Truer words may have never been spoken. Until I get that really serious mindset I don't know if I have any business getting a license. Maybe I'm overthinking this. But the responsiblty a CC entails is huge. When I'm ready for that responsiblity I'll get one.

I carry everywhere I go – even in some places that I would, otherwise, prefer not to, like: churches, the synagogue, doctor’s offices, supermarkets, restaurants, and bars. (When I go into a bar - which isn’t often.) I, still, feel reasonably safe in many of the churches my wife’s large family attends; here, my well-concealed guns do seem extraneous; but I do NOT feel equally as safe when I visit with friends at the local synagogue. At a typical Temple service nobody, but me, is carrying; and security precautions, of any kind, are non-existent. Regrettably, I am positive that most of the worshippers at Temple are not pro-gun, and wouldn’t be happy to discover that I’m armed with their children all over the room. Most of my Jewish friends are very cerebral, very devout, very laissez faire, and infinitely more, ‘non-violent’ than anything I could, ever, imagine myself to be.

Quite frankly I feel very insecure whenever I’m at Temple. Ironically, in my hometown, there is a large Mosque, just, 5 or 6 blocks away; and, hard as I try, I find myself continuing to glance at the door during prayers; and any sound in the hallway never fails to attract my immediate attention. Much as I hate to say it, lately, I’ve had this feeling that I’m living back in the early Middle Ages; I’m starting to believe that NO Judeo-Christian house of worship is safe, anymore. I recognize that I don’t need two pistols, and three magazines to confront a typical bad guy; the reason I carry 29 + rounds everywhere I go is simple: To my mind there are no more, ‘typical bad guys’ in today’s Twentieth Century – just a bunch of wickedly violent, ego-maniacal fanatics who are demonstrably unwilling to let their fellowmen live in peace; and, lately, this disease seems to be spreading exponentially.

If I'm dressed, I'm wearing my gun.

As far as church goes, Remember Wedgewood Baptist Church?

Finally, I applaud you for waiting to get your CCW until you are able to do it in good conscience.

I could use some help on that. How do you know which places are going to be dangerous? Also, how do you deal with places that you thought weren't dangerous but now you find out they are? I'm so darned stupid that I haven't been able to figure out which places are going to be dangerous and which places aren't so I just pack a gun all of the time.

However, I don't carry in the Post Office.

Yep. Owning firearms is a serious responsibility. Carrying them is an even more serious responsibility. It does, indeed, become a way of life.
