I needed some primers, so I guy sold me 1,053 primers. Little did I know that the 53 looked to be old. I'm just trying to figure out how old.

Here's the 1000.

I'm wondering if I should use them. Not because I think they won't be good, because I'm sure they will work, but just for reloading memorabilia.

Thoughts?

Don't shoot them!!!! :what:

They are too old, and might even be corrosive or even mercuric.

Send them to me and I will dispose of them properly!

PS: Hey! Don't yell at me.
A guys gotta do what a guys gotta do during this latest primer shortage!

LOL. I hear ya. I was just kind of wondering how old they were. I think it's cool to have a older package.

I really never used cci but from memory I wouldn't think any older then late 80's..but I could be off some. But card is in great shape. Last year I found about 5 leaflets of wsp when they were still called Winchester small pistol from the mid 80's I had stuffed in a box. I loaded em up and shot them but kept the box end cus it still had the $11 price tag on it.

I am thinking we had some in 74 or 75 that matched those. Shoot em up, just save the package to look at. That's what I usually do:D IIRC the older ones had the elongated green diamond pattern on white boxes.

Well that's got me thinking now....if I should use them or not. Considering, all the pictures I've seen show this front except with a white tray...haven't been able to find one in a red tray.

Wonder if I should email CCI?

That's what I'm afraid of. I think I'm going to side on the side of caution and email CCI and verify that they made small pistol primers that came in that box with a red tray. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'd just use them for range ammo. I've used primers/powder from the 60's with no problems.

True, that's my plans and I'm sure they will be safe. With the difference in tray colors, it has me questioning whether they are indeed SPP. If they are then I can just put them since my recipe I used CCI. Just want to verify.

I wouldn't be worried about them at all.

I've had zero problems with the ones I've shot. They all go BANG. :)

(Also, if they turn out to be small rifle primers instead of small PISTOL primers... you're might be shooting about 35-40 FPS hotter than normal - depends on powder, some has no effect at all on pressure... so back off a smidge if you're already loading at Max Load...)

Mid 1970s vintage... I still have a bunch and use them all the time. the CCIs from that time period suffered a little quality control when it came to the sizing. So some of them might feel a little tight while you seat them. But they work fine.

Trent,
The older CCI primers I have look like the ones in your picture with the all white outside with a little red and white trays. Do you know about when those were around? I know that aren't that old, I just don't remember when I bought them! (getting old stinks)

I have asked and I don't know the shelf life of lead styphnate primers. It is definitely longer than the shelf life of powders. A rule of thumb for safe storage and use of powders is 20 years for double based and 45 years for single based. Primers last longer, though the old chlorate corrosive primers started to dud out around 50 years of age, based on what I have read. I have also read is that primers will dud out if exposed to high temperatures.

If someone knows the chemical stability of components, perhaps they can comment on the shelf life of these primer mixtures. It would be helpful.
