CCI CB Long.. seeking alternative...

I've used CCI CB long ammo for many years in my Marlin levers. It's never been perfect quality wise, but decent enough for very quiet and fun target shooting.

However, I just bought a brick last week (new style packaging) and it's just terrible. Everything from "BLAM" to "poof... thud". Serious crapola. At almost seven cents a shot now it would be nice if it were at least as marginally consistent as it once was.

Does any other ammo maker sell a CB long cartridge? I don't want to waste any more money on this complete garbage and would still like to shoot as I have.

you might look at Aguila, don't know if they do it in longs, but they have super colibris.

My Marlin levers feed shorts well. It may not be what you are looking for but it is an alternative.

I don't know how quiet you're wanting.
I've used the super colibris and for short range shooting from a rifle they're fine and are very quiet.
I also tried out some Wolf Target .22 from my CZ once. It was noticeably lounder but still quiet enough that to me the impact of the bullet seemed to be about as loud as the actual firing.

At the moment to my knowledge CCI and Aguila are on the market. The CCI's has more power and the Aguila will stick in the barrel of my CZ 452 but will exit other rifles we have. I don't recall the exact FPS but have chornoed both. the CCI was faster, IIRC is heavier, and seemed just as quiet, so we no longer purchase the Aguila Super's.

Federal used to make CB's I still have some but their web site no long list them. Remington is listing a CBee on their web site as a "new" item. Midway lists the Remington's but states "coming soon" so it will soon be available if not already.

I'd call or email CCI...

And tell them your plight. I have nothing but a perfect record of satisfaction with both the CCI cb longs and shorts. I load them alternately with win silver box 22 lr hollow points for small game/squirrel hunting in my marlin 39m. Last week my big bro tried them and swore the gun didn't fire. I giggled and said look at the target silly. He then took out his earplugs and tried again to hear just how quiet they are... I like em.. Sorry you are having bad luck. My first guess is that it is just a bad lot.

I have a bunch of the Aguila offerings and use them mainly in my .22 Revolver as I've always been afraid they won't make it out of the 24" Marlin barrel. Dirty as hell too, but they do work as intended, just too low powered for my rifle shooting needs.

The CCI CB shorts I've tried recently were even worse than the longs and so I gave up on them already. I'm sorry to see the CB long offering from CCI following the same crappy path as the short.

I checked Midway on the Remington's CBee long and the expected delivery date is 7/31/08 at $7.99/100 + shipping . I'm sure at least they'll be a picture of a bee on the box that will cheer me up, since Remington .22's have been on the bottom of my "buy" list for some time. Quality can change overnight however, and perhaps Remington will redeem themselves with their new .22 offering and all will be right again in the world... or at least in my neck of it at least...

Not to hijack this post but merely a side question. My savage mark II does not feed cb longs at all, the case is the same length as .22LR but the bullet is not the same weight as most .22's and such is shorter. It hangs up every time and I have to do one round at a time...
Anyone know if they make CB longs in a 40 grain configuration?

I gave up on CB longs three summers ago and went to CCI Target Shorts. I use them for both rifle and pistol shooting.

The Target Shorts are subsonic (fairly quiet) and plenty accurate enough for me. The quality is excellent - never a dud. They are not much more expensive than the CB longs. Most larger stores carry them.

I agree with checking with CCI.
There was a guy on here who had trouble with inconsistent mini-mags. IIRC, they sent him new ammo.

My suggestion is to try some .22 LR subsonics. All the major ammo companies make them, and they are pretty accurate in many guns I've tried them in. They are not as quiet as the CB's but still much quieter than high velocity loads.

The same day I bought the brick of CB's, I also purchased a brick of CCI 40 gr. hollow point subsonic rounds. With an advertised velocity of 1050 FPS, they are not far below the sound barrier, but out of the 100 rounds I tried there wasn't one "blam". In fact, I found them to be very consistent round to round with excellent accuracy. The sound signature was a very mild "pop"... louder than the CB's but not by a lot. The fact that they cycle the 10/22 with 100% reliability (6 mags so far at least) is just the icing on the cake.

But the point of shooting the CB's in the first place is they are even quieter still... pellet gun quiet actually. The severity of the sound signature of a shot heard by others is hard to judge when directly behind and up close to the gun firing it, but in this case the difference is still significant enough. If CCI can hold the quality of the subsonics to that level of consistency (no "blams" or "puds") they should be able to do the same for the CB's with no "pfffffffttt...puh...thud" and hit 6" low at 50 feet. I think a call to CCI customer service is in order. Maybe I'll get a discount coupon for some more crappy ammo. :banghead:
