CCW and Hugs?

The hug attack is bad, but the worst are the upper chest press and the pelvic thrust. When used immediately after the hug, they can be very distracting. An accidental attack of these types from a family member can leave you disoriented and nauseated to the point of incapacitation. Jorg is right, best avoid them.

This is actually a very good thread, and an issue that rarely gets discussed. Last family reunion I noticed there's a real hugging virus going around. It must be in they air, because we used to be a family that might wave or grunt hello after a decade's absence. Now it's hugs all around. I was out of state so I wasn't packing but if I had been it would have been difficult to deal with. You can't kick an elderly aunt for grabbing you in a hug.

Personally I like about 6' of personal space and I detest being pawed at, but Oprah seems to have had an effect on everyone but me.

I'm thinking of skipping a few weeks of bathing before I go down. That ought to work. Or open carrying the Mosin 91 with a bayonet on it.

I don't mind when people (by people I mean only the attractive female type) hug me, but I do the low approach technique, and I'm just under 6' so most can get around my neck pretty easily. I've never been made.
My friend was once. The girl hugged him(he is pretty tall) around the waist, found his hi-power and said "what is that?" He responded very matter-of-factly "Thats my gun." He was so straight and calm about it, she just thought for a second and said "oh."

Ah the old "tactical hug" discussion.

On the -very rare- occasion where I'd be hugging someone I don't know especially well (and yes, sometimes it just happens) I do the "low arms" manuver forcing them to "go high" on the hug.

I saw a gun ad where they called it a PDA (Personal Defense Assistant), I foget which brand. So answering that it's your PDA would cause them to think Palm, Blackberry or something, not gun.

Hug attacks are not limited to non-immediate family members. It is prudent to avoid contact even with family members, even children. While one might think it is extremely unlikely a very young family member (under the age of 5) would participate in such an attack, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of group attack. Even with only improvised weapons at their disposal, small groups of toddlers can prove quite dangerous.
