I'll let you know ;)
I am fairly new to the handgun scene and very new to the CCW idea. My question in all its NEWB glory is thus. Can you carry at a gunshow or am I asking to spend a few nights at the city motel at the expense of my fellow taxpayers.

Not supposed to, but they don't frisk ya down. You're not supposed to have a loaded weapon inside, at least the ones I've been to. If you're bringing one it to sell or trade or otherwise bargin on, they usually put a zip tie in the open action to keep it non-shooting/safe.

Depends on the show, but most have signs requiring ALL guns to be unloaded and checked.

If you sneak a gun into a gunshow, I'd be more worried about being arrested for shoplifting than anything else. When you walk in with a gun, they put an ID tag on it. If you try to leave with a gun but no receipt or no ID tag, you're running a risk. I wouldn't do it.

Most shows I've been to can only have the show under the condition there is no ammunition in the building.

Thus, even though it feels weird, I leave mine locked in my little car safe.

no ammunition in the building?

Gun shows are where I buy my ammo! Usually 500 rounds at a time.

All the ones I've been to in the DFW area (at least five venues so far) clearly post the signs that say "No loaded weapons, CHL holders included".
If you are LEO, you are probably exempted.

Check the signage, but I'd expect it to be the same.

The SAXET show in Texas posts a 30.06 sign. . .so no concealed carry at that one.

Amazingly, they are one of the few places I have seen that actually display the sign correctly.

I simply assume that the "no loaded guns" signage is refering to guns brought in to sell or trade. You don't want to have any potentially loaded weapons being handles by different people. I have never seen a sign at a PA show that specifically refers to concealed weapons. My P32 is definitely not for sale.

The 30.06 sign referred to above is the official no CCW's here sign as required by an establishment in Texas that doesn't want firearms on the premises. I disarm before entering a show, but I still have my little pocket NAA .22 mini. They don't strip search and don't have metal detectors. Now, I haven't been to a major one in quite a while, like they have at the GR Brown in Houston. The major ones MIGHT search with a metal detector, but I don't worry about it at the little shows and I rather doubt they do it at the major ones, frankly. I don't think you're in much of a bind being disarmed in a gun show, though, considering the security usually standing around and the number of LEOs that are gun nuts that attend these things.

In Northern Virginia, the sign at the door of the local gun show states that all guns must be unloaded before entering. Their brochures states that this is for insurance purposes, and that they don't necessarily agree with the policy, but must enforce it if the show is to exist (with insurance).

Never bothered me too much...

I work (volunteer) at the table checking guns into our local gun show, putting cable ties on them to "secure" them. Our policy is you're carrying your CCW weapon and I don't see it - no problem. If I see it (quite a few people show them to me) - it gets a cable tie or you don't get in.

rick, that makes perfect sense. I'm not worried about my security in the show, but sometimes the parking lots are big and the walk is long. If someone wanted to rob someone for their gun, what better place than a gunshow full of unarmed attendees with new purchases?

It depends on your state as to whether the show's wishes carry the force of law or not. In WA, all they can do is ask me to leave if they find my CCW. But keep in mind that concealed means concealed. If you think you might take it out to show someone, try on a holster, etc. then definitely have it unloaded, checked and tagged.

The ones I've attended in SC have "no loaded firearms" signs, but they do NOT meet the legal requirements that would render CCW a criminal act.

If detected, you could be ejected (Wow! I'm as good a poet as the late Johnny Cochran!).

Just for informational purposes, I've never been frisked or wanded . . .

Now, lemme think. I'm gonna be walking back through a large parking lot, carrying a bag of "goodies" that even a typical hooligan IQ would guess is valuable and possibly hard to obtain "on the street." If I, and every other law-abiding attendee disarm from vehicle to building & back . . .:scrutiny:

A resourceful gunny will find a solution!:D

I don't know what the law is, but nobody sees my gun unless I want them to see it, and it wouldn't be observed at a gunshow unless I needed it to defend myself or others. In that case, I'd rather be breaking the law and stay healthy than obey the law and be dead.

I've been to shows in 6-8 states and most were at fairgrounds or convention centers or other publically owned venues. These areas are almost always off-limits for carry. If not prohibited by law then the show promoters will bar carry for liability reasons.

In 50 years I have never heard of a criminal attack in the parking lot of a gun show. Have you?

what i typically do is take the mag out of my ccw piece and put it in my pocket. then i get the gun inspected and put it back in the holster while i wander through the show. after i leave the building, i slip the mag back into the gun. no big deal.

most gun shows in the nashville area don't do anything except make you open the action and look in the chamber. i've been to some that zip tie or put a sticker on them or something. nothing that wouldn't come off pretty quick.

I also agree with Biker, but personally, if a show wouldn't allow me access with my firearm as a CCW (CHL) holder I wouldn't attend, no matter how much I might save at the show. Like scbair says, what an opertunity for a BG on your return to your car.
