CCW. My old home town is really backwards

The sky falls for a while in every state that restore certain freedoms. Then all but the zealot controllers get over it (the ignorant become educated) and life goes on.

“Now you’ve got a whole different class of people that may be carrying them.”

Uh, YEA, they're called Law Abiding Citizens. I hope the Neb. police asked cops from FL, AZ, NM, UT (just to name a tiny few) how they "dealt" with the issue. Around here, cops are GLAD that law abiding citizens carry. Several of the CCW instructors around here are police officers.

Otherwise - what Bowman said...

History Prof beat me to it. That's exactly what I thought when I read the article.

I'm guesing that Mr Peschong is anti-gun and was against the whole idea from the start, and that Ms Combs has a bit more common sense than that. Its pretty obvious who actually looked at statistics from other states that have implemented CCW laws, and who is just spouting the same old tired anti propaganda.

I wonder how Mr Peschong will rationalize things in a year when alll these CCWs have been issued for awhile and crimes haven't gone up, but have actually dropped?

He said if police get called about a person who is suicidal it would help to know if he or she carries a concealed weapon.

How the hell does having a permit to conceal a weapon or not tell the police whether someone actually has a weapon on them or not? I guess that non-permitted people will automatically stop concealing weapons and stop committing suicide with concealable weapons.

But Peschong worries that some permit holders might forget what they’re supposed to do and pull out their concealed weapon to show the officer.

I am sure that this happens all the time.

"Concealed weapon permit holders who get stopped are required to inform officers if they have their weapon concealed.

But Peschong worries that some permit holders might forget what they’re supposed to do and pull out their concealed weapon to show the officer."

That Assistant C.O.P., Peschong, is about as intelligent as a bucket of rocks.

my reply

Dear Ms. Pilger:

When I read your article, I could not help but laugh. Each time a state passes legal CCW, dire predictions abound. Articles are written, hands are wrung. And then...nothing happens.

Florida has had CCW since 1986 (87?). Hundreds of thousands of law abiding citizens legally carry their CCWs daily. They get stopped by police officers just as any other citizen does. They get cut off in traffic like everyone else. They get in arguments with their wives/husbands; they have bad days at work; they lose their jobs; they get audited by the IRS.

Nothing happens. They do not "go ballistic", they don't go to work/home/school and shoot the place up.

I live in Texas, and we have had CCW (we call it CHL) since 96 or so. currently about a quarter of a million Texans carry legally every day. Texas keeps very good records of any crimes committed by CHL holders. Those records are available at the Texas DPS website.

They show, conclusively, that CHL holders are law-abiding citizens to a fault, several orders of magnitude moreso than the average citizen.

Over 40 states now have legal CCW. The pattern is the same everywhere. Anyone who undergoes the required background checks, completes the training and pays the fees required does not take this committment lightly. They are not young foolish hotheads. They are people who take their responsibilities and obligations seriously.

The people who commit violent crimes are the ones you need to worry about, in Kansas and everywhere else. The ones who have no respect for the law, for society and it's mores, for other people, their property. This new law does not apply to them, because they do not abide by laws anyway.

Don't listen to the panicked voices, and please don't be one of them. Read about what has happened elsewhere, and watch what happens in Kansas.

Best regards, Rich

Yes unfortunately we seem to look very silly. Keep in mind this is a college town and the State Capitol (lots of people who would rather be subjects than citizens).

orionengr, the article was about Nebraska. Mentioning Kansas sorta sucked some wind out of an otherwise very good response :D

OT, are you a flight engineer on a P-3?

Dad gummit. I seem to recall KS and NE both going down the CCW road recently, and I have read multiple articles like this (one just yesterday)..Seems as if my old brain is letting me down from time to time... They say the memory is the second thing to go...wish I could remember what the first was...

Bart--
Good catch. Used to be--retired in 01.

Well I wouldn't get exited about this , after all the guy is the assistant chief , the poor guy probably got stuck doing this interview at the last minute without any warning .

The vast majority of what he said is perfectly reasonable

“It’s still relatively new for everybody,”

“There’s this learning curve.”

He said if police get called about a person who is suicidal it would help to know if he or she carries a concealed weapon.

The only thing he said that is bothersome is in regards to the information being made public as to who has permits .

That could have been a personal belief or perhaps the Status Quo from someone higher up in the political food chain that affects the PD and he was just covering his tail .

Or it could have simply been the wording of the question that got that response .

Fact is it is law and it is a law that effects the everyday officer and will require some sort of change in the way they typically do things when interacting with the public .

Like the guy said "there is a learning curve" .

If these people don't like concealed carry,,, they shouldn't get it for themselves and stay out of everybody elses business... Problem solved!

“It’s still relatively new for everybody,” said Jim Peschong, assistant chief of the Lincoln Police Department.
He said officers definitely are aware Nebraska’s Concealed Handgun Permit Law went into effect Jan. 3. Officers have to be much more aware now that people they stop for normal traffic issues could end up having firearms.
I guess it was Asst. Chief Peschong's turn to stand up and say something stupid in public.
