CCW/self-defense question: out of state vacation.

So my cousin wants us to take a trip to her old stomping grounds.

The good news = where I'm going has reciprocity with NC.

The bad news = she's thinking about us taking Amtrak! :banghead:

I know that there are a few "Amtrak Threads" at GlockTalk. Suffice it to say that (last I checked) NO weapons are allowed, not on your person, not in your baggage. So while I'm a-ok to carry when I actually ARRIVE, it's getting my weapon there that is the bugger!

So....a couple of options roll through my head for being able to be pack heat, or at least SOMETHING:

1) Shut up, carry my P3AT, hope Amtrak hasn't sprung for metal detectors!
Problem: if caught, that probably puts one "H" of a dent in the vacation!

2) Shut up, carry my 2oz Fox OC, avoid metal detector, etc...
Problem: OC still not allowed, but I think I can better afford to "dump" it! And then buy some more OC when we arrive.

3) Mail the gun to my destination
Problem: I've not had a BAD experience with either UPS or the USPS, but I bet if Murphy would strike, it would be when I try to do THAT! If it was either mail my gun or go totally unarmed, I think I'd pick the latter.

4) Tape of bunch of zytel "CIA darts" to my person before getting on the train. Metal detector? BAH! Huh? X-ray machine??? Awwwwww, spit!!! Yeah, this one is more or less in farce.

Nothing is set in stone. If we actually go, we'll probably just drive it again like we did last time, so no problems. She may even take a bump on the head and decide to FLY, which would (I assume) mean that I COULD take my gun if I follow all airline regs. But I'm not counting on it.

Sounds like you will be traveling with other people. Other people with cell phones who can always travel fifty feet in front of you and report back about what kind of metal detectors or what not they are traveling through.

Hmmm...that's an idea!

The trick would be getting cuz *cough sheeple cough* to do it without making her think I'm more of a paranoid nut than she already does....*sigh*

What are the consequences of getting "made" if you take the pistola on the Amtrak? Will you be traveling through states in which you are NOT legal, en route to a state where you will be legal? If so, what happens if Mr. Murphy decides to show up while you are transiting one of those states?

I can think of one possible tactic you didn't mention: leave the gun at home.

Or there's another -- refuse to ride the train. Tell your cuz you'll meet here there (wherever "there" is).

Not in so many words, but it was kinda "unspoken" in #2 (and #4 too...).

IE, leave the gun home and carry either OC or a non-metal weapon (CIA Dart, wooden or plastic Kubotan, "ice scraper...)

However, I'm far more practiced in shooting than armed or unarmed combat. And in a testament to government idiocy - while I'm legal to carry there, it might behoove me to double-check the laws concerning OC before the trip!

Tell her you are afraid that the train might be hijacked to Cuba and you would rather fly. Flying with your firearms is no problem. I do it all the time.
