My wife and I were talking about where to go on vacation this winter. Its been several years since we were able to go on an actual "vacation", and she said that she wanted to go someplace with snow.

My first thought was not which state would be the most fun to travel to, but rather, which states will honor my CHL....

Is this normal? Do others plan their vacations based on where they can carry?

I also plan vacations (and have selected places to look for jobs) based upon whether or not I can carry.

Sorry, I can't tell you whether or not this is normal!

I don't know if anything I do, or think, is "normal" :D but I, too, make my travel plans taking CCW in consideration. At least, I want to be able to keep my handgun in the car (even in a locked case). This obviously rules out places like Chicago.

Normality is an abstract notion, what IS normal? I dont personally intend to plan vacations around such issues. Ill go where i want to go and take my gun with me when i got it. If it means carrying illegally then I am willing to suffer the wraith of the government for protecting my family and not having to force myself to vacation in Montana... (currently there are only a few states that reciprocate with CT, and none of them are places i would like to go on vacation)

I do the same thing. The first thing I think about is reciprocity for prospective vacation sites.

We're going to TN this week on vacation, and I have my FL permit so we're A ok!

Of course I don't know if you'd call me normal....

but my wife calls me a "nerd" on a regular basis.:neener:

I'm in the process of getting a few non-resident permits for this very reason..normal???probly not.....not till you need to save your or your family's life someday on vacation....

If you get an outstate permit, remember to include it as part of the vacation budget.:)

Absolutely. We also haven't been on a "real" vacation in several years, and since my wife has never seen the ocean, we are going to the coast.

North Carolina honors my permit. South Carolina does not. We'll be going to NC.

I think I will keep all our receipts and send them to the South Carolina Attorney General. Add a note saying: We just spent all this cash in North Carolina instead of South Carolina because they honor my concealed weapon permit and you don't."

I think you were joking when you said this, but please do. That's an issue that we're working on right now.

Nope, wasn't joking. . .but I can't claim responsiblity for that idea. I stole it off someone awhile back. Seemed like a good idea. . .

I've never planned my vacation around CCW, though for our recent trip this year I did check packing.org just to see where I was covered. Turned out the only place I wasn't was our destination - Texas. I plead the Fifth on what I did.

I plan the same way. Why give your money to places that dont appreciate it if you can help it. Good Luck!

Not only do I plan my vacation destinations around my CCW, I will actually drive a little out of my way to try and travel through CCW-friendly states.

non-resident CCW on vacation trip

If the goal is a vacation in a state where there is snow and where you may legally carry as a non-resident, then the answer is obvious -- come to Vermont, where anyone who may legally possess a firearm under Federal law (is not a convicted felon or a convicted domestic abuse misdemeanant, has never been involuntarily committed to a mental institution, never adjudged an alcoholic or addict , etc) may legally carry, open or concealed, without a license, or a permit, or a note from his/her home-room teacher.
And we *do* have snow in the winter (and well into the spring, unforch). And despite the creeps who represent us in Washington, almost all the Vermonters you will meet are really nice people. And we usually have the second-lowest per-capita rates of violent crimes like murder, armed robbery, etc. in the US. And the place is flat-out gorgeous year-round. The only problem you might encounter would be getting here overland; depending on where you start from, you'd probably have to pass through hoplophobic places like New Jersey, New York or Massachussets. I daresay you could manage that without breaking the law, but it would require some planning. IMO, it's worth the extra planning and attention. We've been here since 1972 and would never voluntarily live anywhere else (although we *have* been known to go to Arizona for a few weeks in the winter as we get older)...

Greatest SNOW on Earth

You want snow??? Come to Utah and bring your skis. We honor all states permits. And if you pack while skiing, NEVER,NEVER ,NEVER ,fall on your oistol.

Definitely. Have gun, will travel. No gun, no travel. I spent a lot of money in the North Ga and Tennessee mountains a few weeks ago instead of other nearby places because of that.

Zrex,

I don't absolutely refuse to go places that don't honor my CHL but I do tend to suggest the places where I can legally carry. In June the wife and I went to Colorado. For that occasion I sent my 20 bucks to New Hampshire and got a non-resident pistol license that is honored in CO. Texas is still working on reciprocity. The next place I'm trying to steer us towards is Florida.

I almost didn't go to Myrtle Beach last year because of that. I found out you can have your gun in your car and in your hotel room, you just couldn't carry it on you.

The attorney general isn't the problem. The problem is with the law. Georgia doesn't have a training requirement and that is the reason that your permit isn't good here in SC. We have reciprocity now. We are working on recognition. And removing SLED from the decision making process.
