Century Bashing

Most of us have had some firearm from Century at one time or another.

and is likely the source of the well deserved bashing they receive.

In my case I speak from experience as I'll wager do most other posters in this thread.

Sarcasm from a Mod. not very "Hi-road"

I'll probably get flamed for this but:

Post # 21 - rbernie posts:

krochus says - WOW! 17 posts in a Century topic before someone said "drunken monkeys" this may be some sort of record.

rbernie Quote:

It was actually stated in the first post, but most folk couldn't kep their eyes from crossing before they got to that part.

starkadder later says -
Oh and by the way sarcasm is most always used when there is a lack of an intelegent reply.

Very subtle sarcasm is still sarcasm..... , I would (& do) expect more from a Mod.

Not very "High Road" rbernie....

I've owned and still own Century guns, and with building FALs their most recent Caspian Arms- receivers are pretty darn good. Not DSA but a heck of a lot better than they ever were- the last wo darn near screwed together.

Most of us would have never seen some of the milsurp stuff we have now were it not for Century Arms bringing them here.

Did some of their stuff suxor? Yes! but at least it was here to work on. Getting my first FAL (a Century build) working was something I was proud of. Bear in mind they do not test fire every gun, if it cycles manually it was "good enough" and a gunsmith was supposed to be the final inspector. The tag says so.

So, some bad eggs, but by and large, not so terrible.

Heck, five cents a round for 8mm delivered. Glad I knew about Senshurry back then.

I own a Century-imported SAR-1 (2002 model), and it's an excellent rifle. When I bought it, I already owned a 188-series Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle; after shooting the SAR for a few years, I decided the Mini-14 didn't measure up, and sold it.

Sure, fit and finish is industrial, but functionally it's a fine firearm.

In my experiences:

Imported by Century? OK

Built by Century? Less than a snowball's chance in Hades that I will buy ANOTHER one of those.

Sarcasm from a Mod. not very "Hi-road"
Oh nos the MODs have a sense of humor... Since when is pointing out the truth such a bad thing. I should get a medal or at least a gold star for reading "War and Peace" there...

I owned a Century L1A1. Century has earned every bad remark and drunken monkey statement as far as I am concerned. Poor assembly, worse finish and a rifle the would not cycle any mag other than the one that came with it.

The English teacher in me really wants to grade your essay, but I'll resist the urge.

NOT all of us are PHDs in the Field of spullum and gramericals -!!!!
Some of us are actually welders mechanics construction workers who OH MY GOD did not do well in school==You want to complain about writing skills --Stuff it!!!! Here we are all Shooters and 2nd amendment supporters- Id like to see you run a milling machine or weld a code pipe joint!!!!!
Come work with me for a day in my chosen field and we can mock your skills... Rant off!!

There is no Century Bashing. Even though everyone knows they use trained chimps to manufacture their firearms. When you buy one as they are low priced one expects to do a little work to get them up to par...not really a big deal in my opinion. Had many enjoyable hours working on my CETME, FAL and AKs spending hours cleaning out packing grease, re-fiinshing wood, polishing and blueing or painting metal, grinding off supressors, enlarging mag wells, changing parts to USA ones or really neat aftermarket parts, with a little tweeking.:)

I find that we usually bring the sarcasm upon ourselves, mostly in good fun. There are a few sharp tonged posters out there but they are not normally the moderators.

As far as Century, I am very thankful for their importing of guns and ammunition as I own several of their imported rifles. I do not own any rifles put together by them though. I do not believe they use drunken monkeys as labor laws prevent the forced labor of inebriated primates. As an unemployable disabled veteran with closed head injuries I have applied several times as I am sure they employ staff of my caliber......:uhoh:...............:neener:..........

:banghead:.....Come on guys I can make a little humor at my own expense.....

I kid about Century as much as the next guy, and like him I own more than a few guns either imported or built by Century. Right off the top of my head I have a WASR10, CETME, FAL, P5 and probably three other guns that I'm not thinking of (also my P6, I think). I think a realist acknowledges that quality can be hit or miss with guns assembled by them and that care must be taken in selecting a weapon. Period. Sometimes the stupid mistakes that they make does suggest monkeys are at the switch, yet, we go on buying their guns, getting gems and dogs.

Not very "High Road" rbernie....

I am unaware of any document decreeing that the staff must refrain from any use of sarcasm whatsoever. If someone's post is nigh-unreadable due to poor grammar or content a gentle chiding is hardly taking the low road.

Century using gunsmiths is an uncorroborated rumor.

I have one century CETME that was of their run of 500 some time ago. If I didn't get it for a steal and it spec'd out ok I wouldn't have gotten it because of the bad press they have.

When I buy a weapon I expect it to shoot and be accurate right from the git go. That doesn't seem to be the case in the experience of too many.

But then what do I know, I'm just a gun snob. :neener:

Oh no the mods must suffer more, and never have any fun after all they get paid 40 x 0 to put up with us... 1/2 of us are sheep bleeting and the other 1/2 are worthy of wearing a tin foil hat.

I am the tin foil hat type so don't mess with me, or i will pull a Darthvader manuver on you...

All 3 of my AK's are from Century, but i looked at them before I bought them in my sticky fingers and not in any pictures on line.

They were pretty cheap still in 01, right after 9-11. I never quite understood the AWB Billy made up as the guns were right there on my dealers shelf.

I didn't buy any SAR-1 because I thought it was pretty. It is a hunk of junk, but one that works after using it for a paddle, and or a club..

The metal looks like crap, and the wood to metal fit sucks, but it works, and it will work and if it don't i will use another one.

The WHY is a women I can't recall came on FOX in early October wearing a red dress, and at 4:30 pm said "The reason 9-11 happend is because Americans are allowed private gun ownership.:

I went balistic, and when I landed on the futon again I got back up and took my wife by the hand to the gun store to find something nasty looking... end of story.

Well not quite... My loving bride tried that butt ugly little shooter and liked it so well I had to go get another one.

The Yugo underfolder came later unfired but new in the box as part of a trade for a boat I sold.

I've got thick skin....

If someone's post is nigh-unreadable due to poor grammar or content a gentle chiding is hardly taking the low road.

I didn't have any problems reading it, & sarcasm is not very High road. Sarcasm was how the OP took it.

Sarcasm is a form of irony that is bitter or cutting, being intended to taunt its target.

7 posts out of 21 were sarcastic about the OPs' grammer. If, while reading them as the OP did, & noticed 1 of them was a mod, I wouldn't feel very welcome here.

I've been reading this forum for several months now & understand how a "rant" post attracts lovers & haters of said item, manufacturer, etc.

I chuckle while reading them, & read the whole thread because I value what you "guys & gals" here have to say about a paticular item.

Sometimes it gets "heated", & it seems to me that the haters of what the OP said will "sit on the fence" & take turns "chiding" him/her. I expect it.... but was kind of surprised to see a Mod do it.

I don't see how repetative chiding does any good, especially from a Mod who has veto/deleting power on this forum. I wasn't trying to flame rbernie & I'm all for "jentle chiding" for poor grammer.

Put yourself in the OP's shoes. Here's a new member who feels he's already on the defensive (for whatever reason), doesn't know anybody, & while reading several sarcastic responses, sees a Mod makes a sacastic post along w/the rest of the comments. He may feel like he wasn't welcome here, & might be inclined to go to "other" forums & say bad things about the people "over on the other forum".

I've seen posts deleted & threads locked by mods on this forum for the same thing albeit harsher "chiding", & figured I'd say something before more comments were made.

Next time I'll PM someone if I have a "off thread" comment. (Love ya Rbernie ;))

I LOVE THIS FORUM & I'm not trying to piss anyone off.

PS. - Hk91-762mm.. Gun God bless you brother!! A 4956 Navy nuclear certified pipe welder said that!! :D:D:D

Hk91-762mm,

I find it interesting that you chose to single my post out.

Since you did single me out, let me say this. I grew up on a farm. I can drive a tractor, cut, weld, whatever needs to be done. Hell, I still have scars on my stomach from cutting pipe a few months ago. I'm not scared of a little manual labor.

As for your milling machine. OK, you've got me. I don't know how to use one. As I figure it however, a high school graduate got 12 years of instruction on using the English language. All things being equal, given that much training on your milling machine, I suspect that I'd at least be functional in its use.

But whatever. I didn't pick a fight with you. Don't start one with me.

Put yourself in the OP's shoes.
Anyone that comes here to interact on THR is more than welcome. :)

However, just as it's a nice idea to wipe your shoes before entering a friends' house, it's considered polite to try to make your interactions here friendly (not start off with 'y'all are teh suk') and to at least make then readable to those folk with whom you want to interact.

If someone can't be bothered to TRY to write in a way that's readable (forget fancy spelling - just use basic punctuation), then why should the rest of the eighteen thousand plus active members be expected to TRY to read it?

I meant no disrepect. However, I did intend to let the OP know that his effort missed the mark due primarily to poor English writing skills. Rather than flatly stating that, I thought that it would be more 'gentle' with a bit of a poke rather than a flat-out slap. If my effort was lost, then so be it.

Turn that into class warfare if you want (ex-US Army Signal Corp, here, a long time ago) but I can promise you that every tradesman that I know is capable of using punctuation and understands the purpose of the <Return> key on the keyboard.

First of all I would like to thank the few members of this forum who actually took the time to read my entire text, and got the point.

NEW PARAGRAPH

I am sorry if my writing skills are not up to your standards here, I thought the was a firearms forum not a creative writing class at the community collage, guess I was wrong.

NEW PARAGRAPH

I may be an opinionated SOB but I would never chastise someone for thier gramatical ability or make fun of them for it, but I guess thats just the Christian in me.

NEW PARAGRAPH

And no I didn't finish high school so I never took any creative writing classes, I was a foolish kid and got my girlfriend pregnant in the tenth grade and had to drop out and go to work to provide for my family, and I wouldn't change any of that because I have a wonderful family, a very good career, and couldn't be any happier.

NEW PARAGRAPH

In closing I would like to also thank the rest of the members who took it upon themselves to treat my post as toilet paper and personaly belittle me for my lack of writing ability, because you most assuredly MADE MY POINT.

Au Revoir

I am sorry if my writing skills are not up to your standards here

Written English is the medium of communication here. It would seem intuitively obvious that some basic ability to communicate in that manner would be a prerequisite.

But hey that's just me.

Century Arms Fact!

I recently purchased a Century Arms Golani Sporter. I took it apart to see how their receivers looked compared to A Galil I had purchased years earlier. Taking it apart was easy but I couldn't get the top piece back on the receiver. 2 hours later, after trying to change parts with a AK-47 and a AK-74 I realixed that the top cover wasn't in the proper place to begin with. I have no idea how the people at Century Arms got the top on the receiver.
They had it sitting on the rear of the receiver instead of down in the grove where it belonged. I was careful to see where it was before I took it apart. I
took the cover out to my building and ground off about 1/8 inch off the front where it goes over the gas tube. After that modification it popped right down in the grove where it was supposed to go. Now I can take my thumb and push the (what ever you call it) forward and it comes off like it is supposed to. And I might add it comes off in seconds. I don't think anyone is bashing Century Arms, just telling you problems they have had with their guns. I would buy another Century Arms gun. Perhaps others have had more serious problems.

starkadder,

Off topic here, but what the hell...

In all honestly, your command of the English language is very good. I'm speaking in terms of clause and phrase usage, transition words, sentence structure, and developing main points.

Overall, I'd say you have strong communication skills.

I was giving you a bit of a ribbing over lack of paragraphs-- which is common on some boards, and will make a reader's eyes bleed.

However it was made in jest-- like practically all posts here.

I'll go on record stating that I do have a problem with people who seem to go out of their way to corrupt language. That is just lazy and lack of concern.

I didn't see that in your post.

You wanted a G3, but got a CETME instead, and now you're ticked off about the drunken monkey bashing.

Reminds me of the guys that say that a UTG fore end for an AR is just as good as any other drop in, and then get ticked off when someone disagrees.

After opening a CAI AR15, I think the monkeys quit drinking beer. They're onto liquor now.
