As I am browsing through my Lyman 49th Manual I notice on some loads for specific powders there is an * or an **.

The * in this case indicates Use of CCI Primers. So my question is why? Why would one HAVE to use CCI Primers over lets say Federal primers?

The ** in this case Designates use of Federal Cases. Again WHY? Why would a Federal Case be any different than lets say a StarLine case?

For reference if you have a Lyman 49th Manual. I am looking at page 382 in the 45 ACP section.

Again I am a newbie and I am just trying to understand what the reason.

Thanks for helping me learn.

Those are the primers and cases they used in getting their velocities and pressures for the loads shown. You don't have to use those components.

Lyman, unlike some other manual publishers, has a complete test laboratory with all the instruments, including a ballistic pendulum and did all the testing for Olin when they were making powder if they still are under the Winchester label. Many of the others just give mathematical calculations that pertain to no actual shooting. :scrutiny: I trust Lyman.

Anyway, Lyman actually tested everything they recommended and reported any anomalies they observed.
