Probably a stupid question and maybe in the wrong forum too, but anyway:

Can a hard chromed pistol ever be blued? Park'd? Not a fan of shiny pistols, but also having a hell of a time finding a Detonics Combat Master. If I get a hold of one that's not "black" is there a cost effective way of changing it's finish?

The only practical method of changing a hard chrome finish is to have a plater DE-plate the finish.
The plater basically reverses the the process and this removes the plating.

Once the plating is off, the metal an be finished with another finish like bluing or parkerizing.
However, in many cases the metal has to be polished or bead blasted to the point where stampings may be degraded.

While this "can" be done, it's best not to attempt to change a hard chrome job to a chemical finish unless you just have to.

HC isn't plated, it is chemically bonded to the metal.

It is not necessary to abrade the HC to remove. I believe that you can remove the HC electrochemically without harming the substrate -although it releases dangerous chemicals in the process.

Call a high-quality gun hard-chroming outfit like Tripp Research and ask them for a quote on what this'll cost. Virgil can then apply the nice black coating that you're itchin' for.
