Charter Arm Rimless Revolver

Yeah I guess a springed extractor would be much easier and simpler than trying to machine the extractor into a case-long device machined into each chamber all the way to the case mouth.

That 547 has a pretty ingenious design, I wish there were more of them around.

what rcmodel said

Charter has, at times, been well regarded, and other times not
it is a "name" brand that has been passed from hand, to hand, to.... well

I therefore don't know what to think about them
So, my "solution" is to not think about them
it's a shame, but it is what it is
caveat emptor

I had a Bulldog .44, probably the worst revolver I have owned over the last 45 years.

I keep hearing good things about Charter's .38 Spl snubs, but have never shot one, and for the money I'd get a Rossi. Used Smiths seem to be out of my price range now, and used snub Colts have been too expensive for about 10 years.

You could take a look at the Armscor revolvers for an inexpensive .38 Spl (Centerfire Systems has them in 2" and 4".)
Taurus used to make a rimless snub revolver and discontinued them for lack of sales. I have seen them in 9mm and .45 ACP, but not for several years.

I've been thinking about buying the Charter Arms .357 PUG. But I wanna shoot one first. The guy I buy most of my guns from says he'll order one for me, but I'd be better off (if I'm going cheap) to spend a few $ more for a Rossi/Taurus. Wish I had my old Dan Wesson back. It was a POS, but only because the guy who gave it to me never cleaned it, left it in the floor of his pickup under the seat. I got rid of it in '86.

Ruger made a model that used a spring that engaged the rim for extraction. As I recollect it was an export model. The extractor was quite different from that of the 547. However I have only seen a photo of this extractor and have not had opportunity to examine one first hand. I am quite familiar with the Ruger Speed Six and the S&W 547, owning several of each.

I've one of the new production Charter Pugs...it is not as finely finished as a S&W bit *is* fully serviceable as a carry gun. No issues with it at all firing Speer 200gr JHP, acceptable groups quickly at 15 yds or slow at 25.

So, I take it that there is no new news about the CARR's. I think I read somewhere they will have the light aluminum frames. I sure would like to get one in 9mm.

I like the idea of the CARR, and would love to have it in 40 S&W. I would have to wait and see if the spring extractor functions as they say. I'm sure they'll be selling these a lot faster than they can build them.

"Available in early 2010" UPDATE

I've been checking the Charter Arms website about once a month since its introduction of the CARR in 2008, and at least once a week during 2010 as under their products section they claimed that the CARR would be "available in early 2010."

This week they upgraded their website however apparently downgraded the availability of the CARR...by removing all mention of it. They no longer have a products page and in stead of it, have a drop down menu including "new for 2010" in which the CARR is not accounted for.[/update]

I've never been a big fan of Charter Arms but I was definately impressed when they said they had developed a revolver that would accept rimless cartridges on an affordable price schedule. Thus I've been faithfully checking their website in anticipation of perhaps procuring one someday. In return, Charter Arms has been faithfully disapointing by failing to produce the one revolver that could truely put it on the map.

I have checked often as well and been disappointed as well.
I have never owned or fired a charter, but this CARR would have changed that; I wanted to purchase the CARR in 9mm and perhaps in 45 ACP.

The economy is tanked everywhere...not surprising that CA is feeling it as well. I'm more than satisfied with my CA .44 Pug and will wait for the new model.

That is a disappointment. Either they lost on the patent issue or felt it was not worth the continued effort.

as of 2 months ago there was a press release availiable online via a google search utilizing "charter arms" 'rimless revolver" "release date".

it was summed up as "we have the complete item designed and patented and ready to be made. but at this time it is not econimically viable to produce due to being maxxed out on orders, and to produce any new design would require reduction of machinery to make current orders. not good for business. "

supposed to be released when their current production capacity exceeds their current product demand by i believe a 10 percent margin.

It sounds to me that not only is the current CA making firearms to the quality they have always desired, but now also have the means and business sense to stick to a growth plan that will work. This promises only good things to come! :D

To promote the new models, get out and grab a .44 Special Pug now...let's push them past their growth point so they are forced to grow and bring out the new models we really want!

I thought posting new thread on this topic was not necessary, but I was curious as to any new information about this revolver actually being produced. I figure there are people on here more tuned in to the "gossip" than I, and I'll ask what they've heard.

CA current handguns are back in family hands and they build a solid firearm. Some folks have charter or charter 2000 that can be junk. Not so with current guns. And the company will deal with what problems do come up. Remember even over price S&W's and Ruger have problems that should not happen at those cost. I have a 13oz ultra lite undercover and have run around 400 rounds through it . It is one of my carry guns.

Looks to be worse vaporware.

I was excited about the prospect of a small light 9mm revolver with out moon clips and was following the multi delayed release. I think it was in the 2008 SHOT show... maybe 2009 .

Delay after delay. ...supposed patent issue with S&W.... supposedly worked past that.... supposed factory working at max capacity with existing product due to the gun scare. Next spring... next summer... 1st half of next year....

But sadly, now, Charter Arm has removed everything off their website about.

Seemed like a lot of people wanted it.

I can only assume the extraction system wasnt working as desired.... but I have no idea.

They removed all signs of this gun from their site months ago, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't want to bash Charter Arms, I have no ideal of the quality of the new company. As far as I'm concerned to be burned once is life, to be burned twice with the same thing is just stupidity. Charter is at the top of my no buy list. now granted, this is the result of my interaction with one of the old Charters ( NIB ), but once burned twice shy

Good thang you did not buy and get one of the many s&w, taurus or ruger with the problems they had. And they are under the same company people running it. There would be nothing left.

Dang, I was looking forward to getting a CA 9mm revolver too. Has anybody got good things to say about the Taurus 905 9mm revolver? Can these be used without the clip (use a pencil to eject)?

And still no mention of it anywhere on their website? I'll believe it when I see it.
