I want to get a AK as my first semi auto "assualt" style rifle but I don't know which one based on ammo prices. its either 5.45 or 7.62. whats the cheapest and reliable 7.62 x 39 ammo? I would like a direct link to the ammo prices. I already know that 5.45 is cheaper in those 1,080 round cans but i want to get a 7.62.

Wolf is pretty good, Silver Bear is better. Wolf is much easier to find right now. Cabela's seems to have glutted themselves with it a bit. I had it backordered for $140 for a case of 500 rds of HP, they cancelled my backorder, raised the price to $160, but right now they have it listed for $119.

If you want 7.62, and you know you do because bigger really is better :D , then go with 7.62 and don't sweat the price diff. It's not really significant and it will change anyway over time. Shoot what you like. Buy cheap and stack it deep.

Welcome to AK ownership, too. It's the most fun you can have without getting naked. :p

i've heard that wolf ammo is unreliable like misfires and the ammo can start to rust. Is this true?

I have shot tons of 7.62... everything from Wolf, Bown Bear, Silver Bear, Norinco, Winchester, and all kinds of crazy surplus stuff that I have no idea where it came from.

It all went bang.

For the people who own or have fired an AK of each chambering, which would you say is the more accurate round? 5.45 or 7.62?

it has a bigger bullet, and i fiqured it would be better in a semi than 5.45 in a semi.

Get yourself any AK it 7.62x39, and it will digest any ammunition you can find for it. That's kinda the nature of the gun.

The advantages of 7.62 over 5.45 is price for magazines, accessories, and spare parts. In the long run there probably won't be much of a difference in ammo cost.

FIVE:
Out of about 1,200+ rds. of only newer ('08) Wolf and Monarch ammo in my Norinco SKS, there were no misfires.

In the Mini 30, out of about 1,200+ rds. it has had about 10-12 misfires, but only on the first primer strike.
As with the SKS, my only ammo is newer Wolf and Monarch, and have accum. 6,700 rds. of it for long-term (only have 2,200 rds. of .303...) use.

As the economy is still in trouble (bank credit policies, and no more "cash for clunkers"), new Russian-made x39 could become a fair bit cheaper.

It's going to depend on the gun and the shooter. I have AK's in both calibers and my AK 74 is definitly more accurate, but it is higher quality with a fantastic trigger for an AK. My 74 is an Arsenal gun and my 47's are a Norinco and a Yugo.

The cheap 5.45x39 ammo is corrosive. Not that big a deal in the AK as its is really easy to clean, but corrosive ammo means you have to clean it after shooting, not a few days or weeks later. For me this is why I don't usually shoot corrosive ammo.

Sounds like a myth to me. I prefer Brown/Silver Bear or Golden Tiger, but Wolf is decent stuff. Every box I have tried has been reliable and non-corrosive.

Any ammo will oxidize if it is not stored properly.

Welcome to the world of AK's. First off aimsurplus.com is where you want to go for ammo (and probably your gun too). They just dropped their prices down to $220 for 1k rounds. Thats about $0.22 a bullet - unbeatable. They are selling Wasr10/63's for roughly $400 (these are brand new Romanian AKs with US parts) - solid guns, but their stock is going real fast you have to call to place orders now. I think 5.45 is more accurate becase of the design and weight of the bullet, atleast this is what I have heard. Ive never fired a 74 so I dont know the recoil, but Im assuming its comparable to an AR (not bad). The 47 has some recoil but its really not bad. The only reason I wouldnt buy a 74 is because they cost alot more (although construction is usually better, especially the polish made), parts are slightly less common and the 5.45 is not a stopper like the 7.62. The 7.62 is basically a take down round which can be used for hunting or self defence and is cheap enough for target shooting. Try buying a Wasr, see if you like it. Dont spend too much money on the gun or ammo - neither are expensive anymore and AK's will fire anything, which makes me think the Wolf Ammo rumor is false.

one thing i just thought of is what is the best AK 47 with a maximun budget of $800?
It has to be a standard confiquration with wood furniture and a black pistol grip.

I have an Arsenal SLR- 106 FR in 5.56 x 45mm and it will happily eat any ammo in that calibre you feed it. The only reason I stay away from the Russian ammo brands is that the cases aren't suitable for reloading.
I also heard some stories about ARs jamming when firing Wolf, but a buddy of mine put 100 rounds of it through his with no problems.
The only real disadvantage I've seen is that the Russian ammo seems to leave more residue in your rifle, so cleaning takes a little longer.

Get yourself a Romanian WASR 10/63 for between 300-400 bucks. Spend the rest on ammo.

A lot of people who drop 800-1k on an AK like to badmouth Romy AKs, but they run just as well as any AK, and with a little do-it-yourself work will look as nice too.

I heard that the WASR's are low quality. i'm thinking that I would have a gun I could pass down to my kids with decent care, because a Gun I get is gonna get shot alot.

FWIW Afghani mujahadeen have passed down 40 year old AKs that were built with hand tools in a cave in Kyhber pass. The weapon was designed to be able to be slapped together from the worst of materials in the worst conditions and still work.

A WASR is a little rougher around the edges than an Arsenal, but will shoot just as well for just as long. Also the quality control of WASR's has greatly improved in recent years.
