Just noticed this and admittedly surprised that I've never noticed this product before. EZ Armor Door Security kit.

Quick and inexpensive way to secure doors from kick-ins (the majority of break-ins). Just several reinforced steel plates added to doors and frame that makes it harder to kick in (as long as your door is solid). They also have solutions for double doors and glass sliders. I like that I don't have to replace the frames as is the typical method.

Anyone use these or has a comment to share? I think for the price, I can add them to the house, including the MB door. This could prevent basic smash & grab types, as well as buy me a few extra secs to get the guns out in case of intrusion late at night.

Problem is with most doors it's almost easier to go THROUGH them than knock them im, and the door is only as strong as the wall it's in.

I often wonder what people in my neighborhood are thinking with these steel security doors with three dead bolts when less than 5 feet away they have huge square openings in the wall filled with 1/8" glass!

I have seen metal plates countersunk into the floor that you inserted a vertical plate into. I can't recall the name of the product but it's cheap, simple and effective.

I have breeched many doors or have been there when they were breeched. I have yet to see one that was truly difficult.

oh yea, it said 85% of break in come through the front door. Probably because so many people leave it unlocked. I would think a determined thief would go for a window if the door was locked, still the door guard seems like a logical product.

Home Security

CWL I want to thank you for posting this, you should start a permanent thread for home security. It is a very timely and important issue. This forum would be served well with a permanent thread about the latest home security products and tactics. Protecting the home and loved ones is what its all about at the root is it not?

They are probably basing their home security decisions on reasonabless rather than attempting to make their home 100% secure, an impossible endeavor.

You are very correct in that the product is logical, and equally correct in that a determined thief would find another way to enter. A determined thief will always find a way to enter, regardless of the precautions we take. But,....

Many years on patrol in an area plagued by break-ins, I can attest to two things.

#1 Most burglars are not determined. They are opportunists. Thus, the second rule applies.
#2 The vast majority of burglars enter through doors, even with relatively easy access windows nearby.

Based upon literally hundreds of reports I've personally taken, I can say that less than 10 residential burglaries had been accessed at a point other than a door.

Harden all areas when your budget/security plan allows. When it doesn't, make it unattractive by hardening the most likely targets.

They're thinking that burglars much prefer to gain access through doors, and that with a steel security door installed they'd look elsewhere for easier pickings. It is reasonable to assume that this is taken into consideration when a burglar is driving around a neighborhood "casing" the houses there.

A door is the logical choice for a burlgar. It's easier to carry things out the door than through the window.

A second for a home security forum.

Eh...double lock deadbolts on solid doors and don't leave a key in the inside lock or you will have a single lock deadbolt lock with a thumb latch on the inside.

Eh....a screwdriver is all you need to take off most deadbolts once you are inside or just knock out the hinge pins and open the door from the opposite side.

long screws that go through your door frame and into the frame or your house is a must , but a good steel storm door with a dead bolt on it is better , hard to kick in a door that opens out

I use a length of 2x6 braced between lower door and opposite base of stairs. Cost almost free. I leave thru the garage so its aleays in place.

A lot of crooks skip the door and break a window.
bad guy better bring a latter , lol , I have an older house , when you come in the door there 3 step into the house and windows are about 2 1/2 feet off the floor , so from the out side the windows are about 5 feet from the ground up

Even if the burglar is determined and goes for a window after trying the door, it will take more time and make more noise, allowing you more time to arm and prepare to give him a warm welcome!

If no one is home at the time, it still makes him take longer, and gives more opportunity for someone to see and call the cops. And a security system comes into play here, as well, making sure the intruder feels like he only has limited time inside the house.

One thing about "security systems", make sure you arm your motion detectors etc.
What happens many times is that each and every swank mansion (read it in the news) has a security system.. go figure.. the thing is though, many folk only partially arm the system because of a pet or giesha girls waving their palm fronds or whatever.. the baddie with his great big brain will toss a barbeque or brick through the biggest window and have himself a leisurely and profitable time with no alarm sent.

You can harden your windows too, everything from wrought iron to an applique I've heard of that makes the glass far more break resistant. Of course, layered security with lights, alarms and my favorite, BIG dogs, helps a great deal.
