Last week I orderd 10 boxes of Estate 00 buckshot 8 pellet from CheaperThanDirt for $4.58 per box, 25 rounds in each box. I received my 10 boxes but they only had 10 rounds per box not 25 rounds. Called customer support and they addmitted to the mistake on their web page. They will not ship me the rest of the ammo nor will they take the ammo back, said it was againist policy to take back ammo. All they will do is give me an $10.00 discount on my next order. What do you guys think I should do? The total bill including shipping and handling was $58 and change. I thought that I finially found a great deal :).

By my count, you should be getting about $34.80 back. You ordered 250 shells for $58 and got 100 shells - that means you got 2/5ths of what you originally ordered, so you should be charged for only 2/5ths.

There was no way for you to know that they made a typo (it wasn't like they'd put 1000 shells for $4.58 or something) and made your purchase in good faith based on the information they'd put on their website.

$10 back wouldn't appease me.

You might call them back, and remind them what they have done is called FRAUD.

The old bait-and-switch routine. BAIT you with 25 rounds for $4.58, but they SWITCH to 10 for $4.58.

And no, a $10 off deal would not begin to satisfy me.

Does the invoice say something like "10 boxes of 25 rounds" ? Was the order entirely 'web-based' or did you speak to a live person when placing the order?

foghorn:

The packing slip and invoice, both say 25 rounds and 10 boxes. They have addmitted the mistake but will not correct it to my satisfaction. I want a full refund or all of the ammo. I am waiting on a call from Miss Thompson, she is a supervisor at CheapThanDirt.

What do you guys think I should do?

Call them again, ask to speak with a manager, usually takes a bit of jawboning to get there. Make it clear to the manager or whomever you get that this shipment is unnacceptable and you are rejecting it. You had a contract with them to ship X for Y dollars. They shipped 2/5 X, and still want you to pay Y? That isn't what you contracted for, so you don't have any obligation to pay them - at least beyond the 2/5 that you actually got.

Tell them you are willing to compramise, rather than return the shipment entirely, as they don't like to do that, they should refund 60% of your purchase price. You should still pay full shipping they charged you, as you only paid to ship what you actually got.

If they aren't going to do that, make it clear to them you will be calling your credit card company to cancel the payment, as you didnt' receive what you ordered. Cheaper than dirt can stop by anytime to pick up their ammo.

I want a full refund or all of the ammo.
Full refund is far more likely than all the ammo. Personally I'd shoot for prorating the payment, as you are still getting a good deal on what you got.

If you purchased this on a credit card, it seems to me you could dispute the charge and get your money back without too much trouble.

After calling several times I finaly contacted Miss Thompson they have agreed to a refund. After spending several hours on the phone and all of the aggravation, saving $58.00 was not worth it. Needless to say I will not be doing anymore business with CheaperThanDirt.

Thanks for the help... :)

I have had good, bad, and indifferent shopping experiences with Cheaper than Dirt, Sportsman's Guide, CDNN, SOG, and god knows how many other online vendors. Most of the time I have gotten satisfaction, a few times, not. However, I buy from them still, if a good deal if offered.
I know it's hard to believe, but 'its not all about you' after all. Despite the fact that we think we should get satisfaction 100% of the time, if thats the worst that ever happens to you regarding foray's into the marketplace, then you won't have had such a bad life.

Bait and Switch common fraud and then tried to fraud again. I'd let them know that bad word of mouth travels faster than good, and that you intend to tell your friends of the lousy deal you got in addition to the ridiculous way they initially attempted to appease you, and that you will never do business with them again. When honest mistakes are made, I've found that honest venders will go out of their way to garner your trust and business again.

I've found that the webpages are great for shopping, but you're much more likely to be made aware of issues with your order if you call it in. I do all my research online, then start making calls. For instance I found out that 2 places were out of the Blazer ammo I was looking for and the 3rd (Natchez) had it on sale for much cheaper than was posted on the website.

I have found customer service at Cheaper than Dirt to be terrible. I will not buy from them any more.

Customer service at CheaperTanDirt is very poor. I know everyone makes mistakes but taking over two hours on hold to fix a problem they caused is ridicules. This does have a happy ending, I get a full refund. :)

Have you learned? Just buy from MidwayUSA. Pay the little extra money for OUTSTANDING customer support.

Wow, I thought everyone had at least heard of them. Here is a link. Like I said, the prices are fair, but the service is outstanding.

I've done a few deals with CTD, and what I got was what was ordered. I've heard some horror stories, though.

OTOH, Midway has excellent service, good prices. So does Gamaliel and Ballistic Specialties.

Caveat Emptor....

Next time just call your credit card company and let them do the dirtywork. You'll get what you want in the end, and CTD would much rather not hear "It's Visa" on the phone.

CTD is local to me, and I've bought from them since they were starting out, and I really don't think they would pull any bait and switch tactics. I'm not disputing the stories about poor customer service, just saying that I think it's inefficiency rather than ethics.

Midway is definitely the way to go. My 7-8 year old Midway tumbler, mod 1292 justgave up the ghost today so I called Midway even though they no longer carry that model. They said to send the tumbler to them and they would fix or replace it free. IMO you cant beat service like that, except maybe at Dillon.

Never had much luck with Dheaper than dirt.

Midway USA is excellent. I've been doing business with them for about 15 years and have had nothing but good experiences with them. They have made mistakes on my orders a few times and always fix the problem at their cost. Once I ordered a bunch of .45ACP ammo, and they sent .40S&W by mistake. I called them and they sent the .45 and told me to keep the .40. They don't have the cheepest prices, but the customer support is top notch. And they don't charge ridiculous shipping and handling fees. They charge only what it actually costs to ship it. Chepaer than Dirt and Sportsmans Friend make a killing on shipping charges.

I ordered a folding knife from CTD and they sent me a confirmation email, then they sent another email stating that it was not the correct price so they wouldn't process my order. Seems to me that CTD is in the business of making mistakes. I would avoid them and avoid hours of aggravation.

Fastlane,

I too would be upset if I ordered boxes of 25 and boxes of 10 showed up.

I'll be the first to admit that we do have errors on occasion while managing 16,000+ products (pricing, descriptions, etc.), but for the most part, we do a pretty good job - and when we have an error, we try our best to make it right. Please call or email our call center manager, Sharon Weeks, at 888-750-5234 x. 117 ([email protected]). She will take care of you (refund the difference, ship out the missing product - whatever you prefer).

Despite what everyone else in this thread seems to think, we get far more customer service compliments than negative comments. It just seems that the negative comments get the most press time. It's kind of like the media coverage on the Iraq war. None of the good work and deeds our troops are doing over there ever get any air time - the only thing we hear in the news is that another soldier's life was wasted.

If anyone out there ever has any issues with any purchase they've made with Cheaper Than Dirt, I highly encourage you to write my info down and contact me directly - I have a bit of pull here in our company, and will make sure you're taken care of ;) How's that for service?

I spoke with Jared at CTD about the order I placed with them March 12. I was expecting 250 rounds of 00 buckshot but what I received was 100 rounds. Which I sent back to them for a full refund. After speaking with Jared and Sharon in coustmer servive I will be receivng my order of 250 rounds of 00 buckshot at the price of the original order. :) It is nice to know that they are people who stand behind their company and product. This was my first purchase form CTD but it will not be my last. Again kudos to Jared and Sharon. :)

Every business will make mistakes. It's how you handle those mistakes that counts.

Good on you, Jared.
