OK I am curious about of all the scope, mount, riser, ring setups available, what do you consider to be the least expensive yet honestly reliable setup? I am guessing this would consist of some kind of UTG or weaver half inch riser, a set of $20 high rings and a Weaver Kaspa? Id like to hear your thoughts. Can it be done for $125?

Here is what I have come up with

Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9X40
Weaver Tactical XX High rings
Total $138 shipped.
Decent setup yea or nay?

Sure. But the cheaper way is to buy a Chinese 1 piece mount off amazon for around 30 bucks. Add a Simmons 8point and you at about 60 bucks.add a nicer scope for more dollars. The China mount worked just fine for me. If you want nicer, the midway stoner mount or the Nikon 223 mounts are good. Add a Bushnell banner for around 70-80 and you are still under your 145 by a fair amount. The 1 piece mounts allow you to mount the scope far enough forward to get proper eye relief. Without it, scope position can get dicey, especially with a small eye box the many lower end scopes have.

Busnell trophy xlt was 105 and chinese mount for 30 is 135 with better eye relief, if I got that straight, and simmons 8 point being 40 scope cuts that down to around 80. Cool. 8 point a decent scope?

It's decent enough. I'm not sure I would want to hunt with it, but it should hold zero and work fine for plinking around. I would feel more comfortable with a $70 banner or a hundred dollar sightron s1. If you are going to be plinking less than 100 yds I would look at a 1.5-5 or 2-7x scope. But that's just me.

I have a couple cheap Bushnells, one is a Banner line. Both have been on and off various rifles for years. Both have very nice, clear glass and a really basic reticle.

I find that the click adjustments are not all that accurate so I zero them and then never adjust them ever again. This is where the basic reticle is problem. If the reticle had any sort of, even rudimentary, BDC the scopes would be FAR more useful. If there is a model with hash marks, then I would not hesitate to recommend the lower end Bushnells.

In terms of durability, for sub-$100 scopes both score very high marks in my book.
