Hi all:

Wow, my second Enfield in less than a month, hope this isn't like a case of Mosinitis. Bought from a fellow Calgunner, nice guy, rifle looked like a good deal and will be fun to shoot. To me, this rifle has just the right amount of wear. The more C&Rs I own, the less I like my "perfect" ones and the more I dig the ones with some honest wear like this one. 1947 ROF (F), non-matching, "Jungle Carbine". I don't know a lot about the history of these, other than the most obvious so I would appreciate any feedback or comments from our Enfield experts. I like my M44s better than my 91/30s so the idea of carbine Enfield is appealing to me. It is a four digit serial, I just got rid of the last two numbers and yes, I know I am paranoid.

Nice No. 5 Capybara.

I always wondered why they put that gawdawful hard rubber recoil pad (?!?!?!) on those little guys?

I'm betting you'll enjoy shooting it.

Really looks good don't it? 10 rounds, short, bolt action, great sights... what's not to love? Besides the hard rubber pad that is.

I think my slip on Limbsaver will be over it. Just like Hicok45, I need one for the LOP, I am 6' 1" and this thing fits me like my son's 10/22. Previous owner replaced the rubber pad, it was rotted away. That's okay, I don't mind helping history when it becomes non-functional. Yes, I have always like the looks of these. Seems as if it will be a fun shooter and it has some collector value as there were only a little over 200k made of these.

I have always liked the Jungle Carbine. The painted finish is typical of the British rifles. They have a solid thump when fired. Accuracy isn't that great but not bad for it's intended purpose.
It's not hard to cure Mosinitis. Any other surplus rifle will cure it The Mosin Nagant is probably the poorest quality built milsurp around, fun to to shoot but built like crap.
It's hard to find good Enfields around here so now I'm buying Mausers:)

Actually, the little loop is for the canvas breech cover that was first issued with the rifle. #1mkIII's sometimes had the mag chained, but that was not a factory practice, usually done in the field. Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley (ROF)F is the manufacturer, and all the rifles had a 4 digit serial number, proceeded by two letters. Rifles were also made by BSA (Birmingham Small Arms). Nice example. Good find!

I've found that the rubber slip-on butt pads made for the French MAS 36 and 49/56 rifles fit the #5 quite nicely. You just have to cut a little slit for the sling swivel loop and you're done. The original Jungle Carbine butt pad doesn't reduce recoil; it magnifies it. The rubber on those things turned rock-hard within a year of leaving the arsenal floor.

I can remember those being for sale in Popular Mechanics magazine for $29.95.

Times have sure changed.

My dad bought one of those and used it for a deer rifle for many years. He was a WW2 infantry soldier so he knew how to use it. A 300 yd. shot was a piece of cake for him. I still can't believe some of the deer that he killed at that range but I was there and it happened.

What is an "L" buttstock?

My own carbine does not have an end cap on the fore-stock, is the cap standard or a later mod? Mine is dated 1-46.

Great find and looks good!, I love the No.4 series but never had a No.5. the more I think about its pretty strange that I've 20-some No.4 rifles through my hands over the years and 10 at one time yet I've never even touched a No.5 weird.....

Anyways congrats on the the carbine and have a blast with her!:)

Carbine85, Finally someone who openly agrees with me. Mosin are great until you shoot any other battle rifle. well, with the exception of the Finns which will keep up with any battle rifle in its class.
