ask @tark......

I havent hit one yet. Closest ive come is yanking both triggers on a hammered 12ga.
Pretty close. My buddy had an oddball hammered 12ga with 3.5in chambers. That bugger was magnum rated!! I USED TO have some magnum 3.5in 00BK. All I can say is two hands on the pistol grip part of the stock. Otherwise a dislocated shoulder may occur. I.E. don't shoulder it!!

*Edit

Those shells had about a 2 oz payload apiece. 18x2= one heck of a lot of buckshot headed downrange.

I've shot some big stuff, to the point were I'd get a head ache after a round of two. The only thing that ever hurt was a 3" Turkey load in a very light single shot. It was my fault , I was walking in from Turkey hunting. The one abandoned silo on the farm was a great spot for pigeons. The silos have that square hole about 3 feet off the ground, about 2.5x2.5 feet. There was only half of the roof on top, and stupid me I reached through the hole bent over and twisted my body to shoot straight up.

All I can say is that it hurt and I sat there for a good 5 minutes with the worst back pain I ever had. Then had to crawl in and get the to birds I shot.

I was at a range with an instructor 2 years ago when the range owner asked him to sight in their new rental .50 BMG Jarrett. I used the scope on my .30-06 to spot for him. That rifle was braked and had a recoil pad but I reckon you could take the brake off if you wanted to.

The Soviet 14.5X114mm is still used in vintage or modified PTRD anti-tank rifles for sniping in some parts of the globe.

The 20X138mmB is the biggest cartridge with a rifle (instead of cannon) manufactured for it, one variant is the S18-1000 that I'm aware of.

For a handgun with more than one shot, the .600 NE Zeliska revolver comes to mind.

I'm sure there are plenty of others if you're seeking maximum recoil. The only one of the above list I *might* shoot if given the chance would be the S18-1000 mounted in its optional wheeled carriage.

It's age and injury related. I liked big booms in my youth. After a torn rotator cuff broken collar bone and breaking my right shoulder twice and now having arthritis. I don't shoot my 06 much and dread shooting my 7MM mag. 12 gauge target and medium hunting loads are ok, but no more magnum loads for me.

460 Weatherby.
577 nitro express in a single shot.
450/577 Martini Henry full bore rifle ammo in a carbine.(only ever did it twice)
50 Bmg Barett m99 (without the muzzle break, because i was stupid and was curious).

I'm kinda a recoil junkie.
And the 460 was a horrific experience in a 8.5# rifle that one of pop's friends had found cheap and he loaded em down for deer n elk.
Fired a couple of maybe ~%70 loads through her then got handed a full bore load. Got a nice black eye from the scope but proudly kept the rifle controlled. The old guys were almost rolling with laughter. I was seeing red but then I remembered all the "big talk" I was spouting about how I could handle it. Taught me to keep my damn mouth zipped as a teenager about stuff I knew little about.

It was funny hours later and pop's friends congratulated me on keeping it controlled. Mom on the other hand was..... not happy.

Back in my high school days my dad picked up a Mossberg 835 Ultimag 3 1/2”. 8 shots at the range, because he “wanted to let me shoot it” and I was done. I’ve added more than a few pounds since then, a little of it is muscle even, but to this day I don’t care for 3 1/2 inch chambers.

Still shoot .300 Win Mag but with the recoil tamed considerably using a brake. That’s a pooch compared to my worst ever recoil moment that came in black powder form, a CVA .50 cal pistol with 100 gr of White Hot. Six rounds and six raps to the knuckles that I was sure had broken my fingers.

For some reason (long, old man sort of story) I have both a 450/400 Nitro Express 3" and a .458 Winchester Magnum.
I have developed some full level loads for them and tested them. Shot them from a standing rest. Survived with no injuries and no major pains.

I do appreciate my 7.62x39mm bolt gun and the .257 Roberts. The 7x57mm isn't really 'bad'.
