I have been wanting a 1911 for a while, and am now ready to finally get one.

I've narrowed down my choices to either a Springfield TRP or a Colt Gold Cup Trophy.

I have been reading, and it looks like there are certain issues with each.

On the Springer, people do not like the way they have screwed up the classic 1911 by adding a loaded-chamber indicator and possibly other things.

On the Colt, people don't like the firing pin safety on the Model 80 (I don't know if they even made a TRP without this feature).

So my question is, which of these two 1911s is the one to get (which is the lesser of two evils)?

Geez, makes me wish I lived through the good ole days before everyone became so paranoid.

I voted Colt because I own several and I won't own a Springer But a better choice would be a Dan Wesson bobtail Its a Commander size 4 1/4" barrel 3/4 " shorter than Goverment size. Its a true 70 series no fireing pin safety or full length guide rod nonsense. A 1911 as they used to be made No MIM parts . Well fitted, night sights, great trigger. My choice for carry. Gold Cup is more a target pistol than a carry or SD gun. Its home on range shooting light target loads.

I voted Colt because I owned a TRP and was not a fan. The tolerances were so tight it would jam from time to time, it takes forever to disassemble and literally hurts your hands in the process because it is so tight, the stipling on the frontstrap will make your hand bleed because it has too few lpi, and it costs way too much for what you get. I've fired a friend's Colt Trophy and it was much more pleasant.

The TRP is fun to show off, but that's about it.

Colt in a heartbeat.

1) I have heard from owners that the fitment on the Trophy is well-above average and the trigger is not an issue on it unlike some 80 Series. The one example I've shot, stock, bore that out.

2) If you are in that price range, and the trigger issues does bother you, a near-perfect Series 70 National Match is also within your budget.

The FPS is a non issue for me; I own S 70 and 80 Colt’s 1911s, shoot them side-by-side and can’t tell the difference – both are excellent and flawless.

I’d go with the Colt because it’s the original and a classic; I’ve never had a problem with my Colts. In addition to how SA may have ‘screwed up’ the 1911 design, I just don’t buy guns made in Brazil – 1911s in particular.

i voted Springfield i own colts and Springfields but i'm a fan of the TRP love how it shoots besides who knows when colt will go bankrup again and abandon their customers.

That Dan Wesson PM7 does look good. I have seen many good things said about it.

I also voted Colt. I've owned both makes, and while I have nothing negative to say about either manufacturer, there's just something about the Colt name that would do it for me.

I agree with Michael T. The DW Bobtail is something you should look at before buying. I've found no faults and mine is better than the 80 series colts by a mile, IMHO. I know that there are other choices, so take your time and make a decision that works long-term for you. It's how you feel about it, not us, that matters in the end.:)

i would get the trp, and instal a gi lenght guide rod, and recoil spring, and plug, and call it a day.

however i hope that the extractor on the trp is better than the one on my sa mc operator, it broke at 3,500rds, and the sights shot loose at the range with about 1000rds through it, so from that make sure you tighten, and or locktite the sighst and be prepared to replace the extractor, but even with all that i would rather have a 70 series gun that the colt with the series 80 design.

Not sure how much experience you have with hand guns. The reduced grips are really nice for small hands. I put a set on my 9mm 1911 as well. Also have them on my SA Black Stainless Target.

Colt vote...

I can't comment on the Springfield TRP as I've never handled one, but I've had good luck with Colt Gold Cups over the years. I have 6 of them, and shoot these two the most:
