Please choose from the two I am considering and Do Not suggest anything else. If you had to choose one or the other if these 1911s which would you buy? You are welcome to add why but please only choose from the Colt Gold Cup National Match or the S&W E Series 1911.

There is no real need or use, just because. I like the Colt because, well, it's a Colt. I have also heard very good things about the S&W E Series pistols, what to do?

I voted for the S&w because from my limited experience with one colt and one s&w e series the e series has a much better trigger, better finish, and just felt all around smoother

A Gold Cup is not the best carry gun. Too many sharp edges. Gold Cups can be finicky with certain ammo. But it's a Colt, and I think you will be proud to have it. The Smith is a carry gun, it will be around for a while. If you don't want to carry the Colt, save up and get the Smith (also)....the beauty of the 1911.

I voted the S&W. I would probably pick the Colt if your use was bullseye competition.

20150112_160252-1_resized (1).jpg I bought a new National Match about 3 years ago. I have only put 3k or so rounds through it. I have not taken it apart or cleaned it yet. It feeds any bullet style great, is very accurate, and has a good trigger. I couldn't ask for more.

Had a Gold Cup many years ago. A little finicky about the ammo but when it was on, it was one of the most accurate semi-autos I have ever shot.

the series is a more up to date 1911 that will serve a more variety of uses. I like colts, but only because they are colts..so thats not a really fair reason to suggest colt. my vote goes to smith and wesson. The only thing i dont like about the e series is the extractor cut for night time bullet indicator...just not very 1911 like and if its that dark that someone cant see doing a brass check then a handgun is useless anyways.

???? I suppose you suggest an AR with a PEQ-2 (Sorry, ATPIAL) and and a PVS-14..........some people use a flashlight conjunction with a handgun in pitch dark, but would rather not use it to chamber check.

I am not a fanatic of either, so I can be very objective. I chose the Colt. With out an expressed purpose for purchase, a match Colt would be more valuable, longer. I do not care for an external extractor either, or I would have a Sig Nightmare to compliment my nine thirty eight.
I enjoy the simple lines of the Colt, compared to the relative busy apperance of the Smith.
In my opinion only.
What do you like about the two?

I have both. If the Smith is from the performance center it is a great shooter, probably a bit more consistently accurate than my GC. I also have the Smith scandium frame Commander size. Very, very accurate and easy to carry due to size and weight. I am carrying it today as a matter of fact. As for the GC. It shoots great, its a Colt. It will retain its value better than the Smith in the long run I'm guessing. Oh, did I mention its a Colt?

I already said what I suggest. I'm just saying that was a useless feature built into the gun.

And pvs 14s are garbage. Nothing like falling down a set stairs or litterally tripping on everything with those.

Do the National Match Colt's come with the old-school rat-tail grip safety? If so, they'd be off my list.

The National Match Colts come with the old style grip safety, are blued and are Series 70. The Gold Cup Trophys come with a beaver tail style grip safety, are stainless, and are Series 80.

The new National Match comes with a recoil spring for 230 FMJ hard ball and a light spring for target ammo. My Gold Cup Trophy has fed 200 gr and 185 gr SWCs without a hitch but I've only run about 300 rounds through the gun.

I assume the S&W comes with an external extractor. I'm sure it works fine and I have one on a Caspian slide, but they just do not ring my bell. I've never had problems with the original extractors in 1911s.

So, I'd buy the National Match but will admit I have no experience with an S&W 1911.

cfullgraf, you don't happen to know if Colt is moving to make the Gold Cup Trophy's Series 70 like they have with the Competition Models? It would seem to me to be a logical decision on their part, but this IS Colt we're talking about. (I'm dreading the day they decide to release the Delta Elite in a Series 70 trigger system. It's going to be expensive for me...)

ArchAngelCD, I voted for the Gold Cup National Match. Because I can't think of a better gun for "just because" use than a nice round-target oriented pistol (or rifle). There's a lot more to the shooting world than having the latest and greatest self-defense pistol, or the newest tactical bred blaster carbine. It sounds kind of relaxing to go plink for an afternoon with a .45 Bullseye pistol and a bucket of 200gr SWC.

(For the record, I never plink with my AR-15 Service Rifle, the barrel life is too valuable to waste! )

I have an old Gold Cup and a fairly new S&W stainless target model. If you want to shoot
target the Gold Cup might not make the 10 ring unless you have it worked over. Mine got
worked over by a custom smith and became very accurate. The Smith needed a little work
as well. Both are now target grade .45s.

I'll have to take your word on that one we had just got PVS-7's whet I got out......
rough man. pvs 31s are where its at. you can switch lift one of the oculars out of the way to persevere natural nightvision in the eye or have both down for better dept perception. there on gen 4 now, so i guess it super clear. I dont own the night anymore, looking to get out soon, but a lot of tier 1 guys these days are rolling around with $42,000 on there head now. eotech gpnvg.

I have no idea what Colt's plans are for the Gold Cups or any other 1911 in their catalog. I decided recently to invest in a couple extra Colt 1911s on my bucket list on the off chance Colts might become difficult to get.
