I posted my Trap Range Report about my Simson and Benelli shotguns the other day. One of the questions I asked in the reports was my usage of the Mod and IC chokes during a shooting round. The use of the IC choke signifigantly dropped my scores down, leading me to believe I should use the mod or most likely full choke with a 20 gauge Nova.

Ok, thats an easy problem to solve, the issue I am now facing is that I dont know what choke the 16g Simson SXS is using. There or NO obvious choke marks on the barrel anywhere. And try finding a 16g choke guage anywhere. Does anyone have any ideas or the exact measurements I could be looking for with a caliper or some other instrument???

found something

I found this on the web...

Negative Choke = .005 larger than bore size
Cylinder Choke = .000 Bore Size
Skeet Choke = .005 smaller than bore size
Improved Choke = .010 smaller than bore size
Light Modified Choke = .015 smaller than bore size
Modified Choke = .020 smaller than bore size
Improved Modified Choke = .025 smaller than bore size
Light Full Choke = .030 smaller than bore size

So a 16 gauge is .66 inches ....

Therefore

IC Barrel = .650
LMC = .645
MC = .640
IMC = .635
LFC = .63

Answered my own question ... isnt research nice?

Regardless of theory or published numbers the only way is to pattern your gun . There are too many variables in chokes ( Benellis run tighter than most) and ammunition so you MUST check patterns.

Patterning IS how to determine the choke, not the other way around. Note than many Euro shotguns run tighter in bore diameter than US standards.

The proof's in the pudding. It breaks targets nicely at normal trap shot range.
So, it's Improved Modified or Full.

HTH...

Third vote for patterning them.

Regardless of any markings, the pattern board will tell true.
Patterning will also show any sighting errors.

And different ammo loads will give different patterns with same choke.
