I'm looking for a home defense shoptgun Rem. 870 w/ either 16" or 18" barrel I saw one that was called a turkey barrel had sights on it I liked. But don't know if it is what I want. Looking for info on chokes and barrels.

It's not my first shotgun I have a Winchester w/ rifled slug barrel for deer.

Jed, the archives hold much good input. Mine them for stuff on chokes in the Chokes 101 thread for starters.

The Turkey barrel of 21" is a fine candidate for a "Serious" shotgun. 18" barrels are the shortest we get without lots of paperwork.

Jedi,

Any shotgun barrel in the US shorter than 18" is going to cost a lot of extra paperwork and an extra $200 for Uncle Sam in order to stay legal... .

Remington's current barrels of 18- 20" for the 870 are now made with fixed ImpCyl chokes (save for the HD version, which is still CYL). Older barrels are pretty much going to be CYL for the most part. The current 'turkey' barrels (21", 23" VR with two beads) are fitted for RemChoke tubes from the factory.

Given the results being turned in by newer buckshot loads, choke is less relevant than ever at HD ranges. Dunno if this covers your questions, if not keep asking...

Thanks Lee,

I think you got what I needed. I knew there was a min. length I just couldn't remember if it was 16" or 18". Definately going with 18" not looking to pay a fortune for 2 less inches.

I gather from what you said that the choke on a factory 18" barrel would be appropriate for a Home defense purpose. That's what I was really wanting to know.

Thanks,

Do they make 18" for a remmy, I think the shortest is 20" with IMP or REM chokes. But Don't take my word for it.

To get basic, a choke is refering to what it does to the shot pattern as it leaves the shotgun. The more choked the tighter the pattern at distance. Turkey chokes are tight due to trying to blast their head off within 50yds. For home defense you are talking within feet not yards so any choke would do to get your point across because the concentration of shot will still be there at so close a range. Just make sure to get big enough shot.

That's what I want but, I am interested in the sights I saw on what they refered to as a turkey barrel. They looked like some kind of neon green and red night sights. They were not reel tight like a rifle but wide enough to target quickly. I thought it was a new gun but perhaps it had after market sights?

Remingtin web site only mentioned front beed sight.

Most Remington 870s with screw-in chokes come with one Modified choke. The 21" Turkey gun comes with an extra-full extended choke. Most of us will never need this choke designed for hunting large birds at a distance, but it is still a good value because there is no extra charge. You can buy chokes individually, both Remington factory or after-market. There is also an Express Upgrade Kit, which has a "speed" choke wrench, a small bottle of REM oil, and two chokes: Improved Cylinder and Full. Improved Cylinder patterns well out to 30 or 35 yards and can also be used to shoot slugs.

I personally would go with the rem choke. True at HD distances it won't matter but pop in a full or super full tube and you instantly increase your range for other applications.
