Crono results from last weekend;

Shooting 158 XTP's from a 6" gp100 .357

16.5 grains H-110 (magnum primer) 1328 FPS
7.8 Grains Unique ( standard primer) 1250 FPS

Makes me question the wisdom of using H-110 with this bullet. The added powder expense, in addition to recoil and muzzle flash, to gain less than 100 FPS ?

yeah, I know what you mean, plus, as you say, you have to use/stock magnum Primers.

You got better velocity than I did, my 6 shot avg for Sierra 158gr JHC, 1.585", 16.6gr 296, only got me 1262 fps from my 6" GP100. 42 degrees, 750 ft above sea level.

I like Unique, now I shoot more MBC 158gr LSWC's.. been tinkering with some Berry's PSWC's too. Haven't decided which way to go yet.

Your results are why I rarely stray away from powders like Unique or in the case of a jacketed .357, Power Pistol....The gain is not worth using twice as much powder and having to keep magnum primers on hand.

Yea, I loaded some 158 grain plated ones with 6.5 grains Unique and got an avg 0f 1063 FPS. I was a bit worried about crimping the plated ones enough for a heavy load, so didnt go any higher than that yet

Rather than stocking magnum small pistol primers I just use small rifle for h110/296 loadings.

One thing to keep in mind though is that as bbl length increases so will the margin that h110 outperforms unique.

In a carbine your unique load would brobably be pressed to make 1500fps. That h110 load does almost 1800 in my rifle.

Thanks for sharing your numbers, the Unique load did very well in your setup.

I'm doing the same with 125s, experimenting with Unique, Power Pistol and AA #7 to begin with. With the 125s all that's needed is to reach the 1450-1500fps velocity window.

now i am really confused

Bought some Federal 158 grain JSP for comparison. These things feel positively tame compared to my h-110 load. Yet, they chrono faster than my fire-breathing, kick-like a mule h-110 load
Thw federals, out of the same 6" Ruger Hi 1386 lo 1324 AVG 1355

On another note, 125 XTP with 21.8 h-110 got me 1705 / 1631 AVG 1662

Update

Tried some AA #9
14.0 grains,magnum primer - much less flash and perceived recoil than the H-110 load, but chronoed a touch faster hi 1357 lo 1235 AVg 1295
Felt about like the federal factory loads

I've been using H110 and 296 for many years because they operate with extremely consistent velocity. And even though I'm running this heavy hitter powder, my brass life has been excellent. I don't really track the number of reloads any more, my observations in this area has shown at least 20 - 25 reloads before the brass begins to fail.

But this is the beauty of reloading. We can do it any way we like, and still be correct for what we are seeking in performance and, or, economics, considering that is, if we aren't experiencing KB's or some other catrostrophic failure.

jim8115, AA#9 don't require a magnum primer to get complete ignition. I bet if you switch to a standard primer your ES will be lower. I've been reading up on AA#9 for bit now and like what others using it say aboit it, plus it is flash suppresed. I may give it a try when I use my can 2400.

For my handgun needs I've done away with H110/W296 as they are rough on revolver frames. I may give Alliant's new Power Prom 300 MP powder a try to as it does not require a magnum primer and is a little slower than H110/W296.
